Bulls have released Hersey Hawkins from their roster... http://www.sportingnews.com/nba/articles/20000919/260270.html
It should be interesting to see which team picks him up. The Rockets could always use a veteran gunner like him, but I'm thinking a team starving for relief 2's (my guess is Miami or Minnesota) will snatch him up from the waivers......
    What do ya'll think?

Hawkins is about the last FA I would choose. In fact, I would rather bring back Pig Miller than have Hersey. Just my opinion.

TB3, I can see where you're coming from.
I honestly don't see the Rockets picking him up, with our backcourt depth and all, but that's not to say he wouldn't be a nice pickup nonetheless.
I'm really thinking that Hawk could really help Miami fix its newly-acquired depth problem and bolster their bench (especially after Riley bailed on signing Rider and Elie), so that's why I most likely see him going there.

    Hawkins is finished. Through. Gone.

He is completly and utterly worthless to us EVEN if we weren´t already loaded at SG.

He couldn´t run even to save his life from a rampaging bull. (pun not intended)

Couple of years back, when we ran the half-court dump it in... kick out... offense, he might have been useful, but now?

    Forget it.

    Thanos,
That's a little bit of a brash statement...
In a league where good shooters are becoming fewer and fewer, I think that any team could use a good outside threat with veteran savvy like a Hersey Hawkins.
I think it's pretty unfair of you to just write Hawkins off as a zero-value scrub simply because he isn't a "good runner".
So many posters on this BBS are so drunk on getting the fastest runners and youngest gazelles and exciting stars for our team while forgetting that you don't win without some veterans and proven role players. Not everyone we get is going to be a Mobley, a Francis, or a Taylor. In every puzzle there are big pieces and little pieces.
Hawk may not be the best fit for our team, especially with the direction that we are moving in (IMHO, he'd probably be a better piece for a championship contender rather than a rebuilding young team), but I certainly don't think it's right to say that he is worthless and that we should just "fuggetabout" him.
Now if you want to talk crap about Benoit Benjamin or Cory Alexander, then be my guest [IMG]

The Rocks already have vets like Dream, Bull and Walt. Shandon played in 60 playoff games for the Jazz and Moochie is 27 years old.

Hersey started 49 games for the Bulls last year and only avg'd 7.9 ppg but shot 39% from the arc. I think his value as a shooter and his 90 playoff games of experience do not compensate for the minutes he would pull from Langhi.

A number of posts have wrestled with who are the Roster 12 and the IR 3. Hersey's addition would further complicate the issue.

Next season there will be enough experienced FA's available to "round out" the roster and we will have had the luxury of hindsight to see where these additions are needed.

AxSomebody? You took the words right out of my mouth, i.e. "you betta axsomebody else if they want Hersey Hawkins in a Rockets Uniform". I don't see how the Sonics used to kick our butts with Gary Payton, Nate McMillan and Hersey Hawkins. Gary Payton is Gary Payton, but those other two guys are wanna be Joe Dumars-a poor man's version of a bad imitation.

Nate's gone, and was better when he left that Hersey could be if he retired now.

    ------------------
Don't anybody ever suggest again that we sign Tracy Murray to a deal.

FYI folks....the reason Chicago dropped Hersey was because they didn't want to pay him a 4.5 million dollar salary next year (and neither would I) BUT....
If you look at Hawk's stats he's always been a good shooter and a solid contributor on every team he's been on. He's a good overall shooter, a pretty good rebounder, and he's almost always averaged more than 1.5 steals per game. I'd say that's alot better than just yardwork.
I still don't think it'd hurt to pick him up, if only for insurance purposes, but I stand by my assertion that he'd be a much better fit and get more PT elsewhere.
Gater, I agree with your points....but I honestly don't think that having Hawk on board would be that horrible....
Pass 1st, Shoot 2nd (or should I say Post 1st, Post 2nd)...Hersey may not be in his prime, but I think it's a little extreme to say that he's kaput and would be better off retired....I seem to remember another veteran shooter we signed who the rest of the league wrote off as gone as well.....and I think he also hit a game-winning 3 in the Western Conference Finals that same year.......

    AzSomebody,

Saying that Hersey Hawkins is like Eddie Johnson is nuts. That kind of luck is what every GM hopes for. Eddie Delivered. I wouldn't count on Hersey Hawkins to do that for us. Remember, we are going to be fighting for a play-off spot, and don't need to risk a key roster spot on that guy. We could get CBA talent cheaper if we should need help at the guard spot...

They say brevity is the soul of wit, but just don't get "Post 1st, post 2nd"; that one was a bit too clever for me. Appease me by explaining that...

    Bulls still pay Hawkins salary!!

All it does is give them a roster spot. Since he's a FA next year it doesn't give them any salary cap grief in the future anyway, and they don't want him so they got rid of him!

    AxSomebody,

I was all about getting Eddie Johnson 3 years ago. I think Sedale Threat was a waste of money, but E.J. was always a bonus because he brought so much to the table with his scoring and smarts. Hersey Hawkins isn't worth a Hershey bar right now. He couldn't put up numbers on a crappy team. That's my point.

I didn't realize that my post was posted twice. That's funny that I didn't even realize it!

    Pass 1st, Shoot 2nd....
It all comes down to a matter of opinion, and I respect yours....
But I personally believe Hersey has had some of the same things that you liked about Eddie Johnson, and his numbers, although not spectacular, are still pretty solid even on a crappy-ass Bulls team (and with less minutes than ever before in his career). If you look over the span of his entire career, this guy is a consistent player....and honestly, his career-lows performance with the Bulls last year was not that big of a departure...
You disagree with me on this point, but I still think he can contribute in the NBA, be it on the Rockets or not...it'll be interesting to see where he ends up and what he does (or doesn't) do.

According to ESPN.com, he's headed to Charlotte to help fill the void of Bobby Phills and Eddie Jones. Good luck, Charlotte.
