I don't really expect anyone to know the answer to this question, but I figured it was worth polling the masses on this. I know there are people here more knowledgable that me on this sort of thing.

I'm installing XP Home on a brand new computer for a friend, so everything is fresh. I'm booting off the CD to install, and it seems to be detecting the hardware just fine. But when it gets to the point where it says Windows is starting, the CD just stops spinning, and it acts like it's freezing up.

My boot order is floppy, CD-ROM, harddrive, and there's only one drive. I checked all the cables and they're connected. I reformatted the harddrive just in case, and it worked without a hitch.

I've never seen something like this before, and I've reformatted many drives in the past, but maybe I'm missing something.

    Any ideas?

Sounds like out of the box hardware issues to me.

Most probably your XP CD is corrupted.

It's the same CD I have installed on my other box, and I just reformatted that a couple weeks ago.

I've considered this, but nothing is acting out of the ordinary, and it was tested pre-shipping. I've talked to them on the phone.

    So it's working now?

Was the drive formatted already before you began your initial XP install? Because before you get to any GUI, you have to specify what partition you want to install it to. So did you create a new one or use an existing one?

No it's not working. When I received the computer, the drive was formatted but had no OS installed, just a basic command.com, etc. Enough to boot to DOS.

I decided to reformat the drive when it started freezing, so I reformatted using an old Windows ME boot disk.

I didn't actually delete the old partition.

Microsoft knows this and won't let you install it on a 2nd computer.

Is the XP CD an upgrade or a full version?

    Yep,

You can not do multiple computers with one op system any longer.

    XP stops that cold.

    Yes,

Unless you have the cracked version...but then you don't get the updates you need to fix the security holes...right?

Xp home doesn't require activation, does it?

You mean the fixes to the security holes that introduce new security holes and/or problems.

Do you have a separate CD drive you can try on DH? If it works on that one, you could have a bad CD-Rom.

Yeah... unless the computer I'm installing it on is completely independent of any network, and therefore, Microsoft's knowledge.

I have 2 copies of XP coming to me in the mail, and I wanted to get the computer up and running.

Then I'm going to install XP Pro on my machine, and give my old XP Home to my friend.

So yeah... that shouldn't be an issue.

I do, but I'll have to pull it out of my other computer... I guess I could try that.

The main thing is, it acts like it's working correctly. I can access files on the CD, and everything looks just fine.

Corporate edition doesn't require activation, neither does certain OEM editions. If you're using corporate with one of them naughty CD keys out there, you can still get updates unless your are using the RHQQ2 and maybe one or two other keys. Not too many are still using that key.
