I'm not sure these studies legitimize Gore's argument. You cannot count double-punched ballots. And what is with 1300 people who punched everyone but Bush? If they were trying to say anyone would be better than Bush, they really shot themselves in the foot!

More than anything, it reinforces the fact that this election is tainted and GW, while president, isn't working with any type of mandate but Gore wouldn't have been either.

I saw an interesting thing on CNBC discussing the popular vote being won by Gore and the fact that the electoral vote was really in question and the impact that has on how congress deals with the president. Essentially, even Republican congressmen and women were saying that Bush is not in for an easy go of it.

Under normal circumstances, presidents are given the benefit of the doubt by both parties for a while. Because many senators and congress men & women have respect for the mandate the president receives, they are more patient with them in office. This isn't the case this term.

One senator, a Republican, basically said that no one was inclined to support anything the president put in front of them without scrutiny even if they were in the same party because they were fearful of the potential backlash from their constituents. Obviously, the more conservative, the more likely they are to support Bush at every turn, but the narrow margin in both the house and senate means it will be slow going for Bush.

By the way, a good friend of mine works on campaigns every year and said that what happened in Florida is the fear of every election judge because everywhere ballots are tossed, lost and messed up. The only difference is that it is rarely this close.
