here is the link to the complete article, it basically argues if Melo is a super star, I just took out the part about morey and the view that super stars win games going beyond stats. Lock if posted already Link
Carmelo is a moneyball player. Whoop, there goes the notion that moneyball players are above average players on small contracts.
If we can get Melo without giving up too much, and convince him to sign extension, then go for it; but it still doesn't address our biggest need which is a defensive minded, shot blocking, rebounding center. I wouldn't trade away our young guys or productive guys for a half season of Melo madness, and the continuing Melodrama saga of 'where will he be next, will he stay a Rocket or bolt to the Knicks?' Everyday in all the media. This should be a very interesting next few weeks.
Yep. Morey stated on numerous occasions that the most underpaid player--and the best "value contract"--in the NBA was Lebron James. The Rockets have statistical analysis used to factor a player's true value to a team (Shane Battier is/was actually UNDERpaid based on this metric, at least as of two seasons ago). Lebron's worth about $50 million PER YEAR based on this metric. As he's stated before, the best values in the league are guys playing on rookie contracts and max players. In both situations, the league restricts their salaries to below their true worth.
but but but I thought there were some people that said Melo isn't a true superstar and not worth max dollars
morey has always said that some players are worth more than the max, which would make them good value players at the max. melo is a high volume scorer but he does so with high %'s so i can see how he would be a morey type player. also, every time i read Henry Abbot i think im reading an article written by this guy: <param name="allowFullScreen"
I don't see how winning can go beyond stats when winning and losing is measured on how many points each team scores. It's not as nebulous as people like to think.
Maybe he thinks Melo will step up his game when he goes to a new franchise ala Amare *shrug* Even if you don't look at stats at all, Melo's track record hasn't exactly been superstar worthy-despite having some good pieces around him the Nuggets haven't exactly been title contenders these past few years. Personally I don't think he'll make much of an impact on the Nets or NY.
Just do it. I think Morey is thinking about renting him seriously. Just go ahead and do it . Try to get something else in the trade back so if he bolts we have something here at least.
carmelo is a superstar's superstar. he is up there with lebron/wade. he is worth a max contract and he is a franchise player. I'm sick of this role player party with all hustle but no wins.
Morey has said this before - the best contracts are rookie-scale contracts and elite players playing for max - carmelo probably isn't his first choice, but he's the only one available
"Dork Elvis" is probably getting paid 2-3 times more than these guys mocking him. Elvis is about to rock the NBA.
The guy's a slightly above average player at best. Real superstars dominate both sides of the ball. The stats bear this out. He can't even take a team with one of the strongest front courts in the NBA past the first round more than once, I shudder to think what he'd do with no front court at all like we have...
Like many have already pointed out, if the player's metric value is higher than the max, he's a good value. That does not mean that Anthony is a first tier superstar who can carry a team like a LeBron or a Kobe. There are probably about 20 some players that are worth more than a max contract. Not all of them are created equal.
Good analysis here too: http://basketballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=1412 My take is that Carmelo may well be deserving of the max, and more, on a team that needs his offense. But do the Knicks really need his offense? Do the Rockets? If the lessened offensive load for other players lets them focus more and expend more energy on the defensive side, then it could be worth it.
I totally agree with your take. But I think it goes further than offense. Our offense is pretty horrible in fourth quarters. No one can create their own shot consistently. Brooks is probably the closest thing we have to Carmelo. Our 4th quarter collapses are a very serious problem
