So after 3.5 years + with a launch era xbox I finally got the dreaded RROD. What are my options? I don't want to lose all my saved games etc.
All your data is stored on the hard drive, so you don't have to worry about that. Simply use your old hard drive on your next system. I'm assuming it's out of warranty... you might have to get a new one.
There's a button on the top that will push the hard drive out. The hard drive is the gray box at the top. Also, go to MS's XBOX page and look up your warranty status. They extended it to cover RROD, so you still may be covered. If you are, fill out the info they send you a box you send it back, wait, get it back.
Yeah, there is a tab that you push in while you pull the hard drive out. http://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/xbox360/hardware/accessories/storage/harddrive.aspx
If you get a new console, you can get MS to send you a cable that will transfer all of your data onto the new hard drive. It comes free if you buy a new hard drive but if you buy a new system you have to request one. This would be useful as I'm assuming you still have the 20 GB hard drive and would be looking to upgrade to the bigger ones on the current systems. It's a quick process. I did it once I purchased my Elite. In fact, I may still have the cable laying around somewhere if you decide to go that route.
Buy a arcade and use your old hard drive. LIke other posters mention, you need a transfer cable. MS should mail you one for free upon request.
Call MS, take the HDD off and send it in, they will send you another one...and your data is all on the HDD so you are good to go. Depending upon where you live you will be without your Xbox for a week or two..... In Texas it is about 7 days....but the shipping/repair center is in McAllen Texas. DD
I think the warranty was extended to 3 years for RROD, so that would be 1 year+3 additional years. Best thing to do about it is now, and go to the link DD sent to order your Shipping Box.
i had to send my xbox in last week for rrod as well. i'm up in dallas and it took less than a week total for it to get back to me. iirc there is no set warranty period for rrod, microsoft will fix it regardless of the age of your console the warranty on mine was expired but they fixed it anyway and it wasnt an exception or anything
Yeah they will still fix the RROD regardless of being past your warranty period. Guess its no big deal for them. Plus its their screw up, why should we have to pay for it?
Go here....they're online support center was pretty helpful. You can check to see if it's under warranty, which it probably still is for RROD, print out a shipping label. I think you can request a box but it takes longer. Go to a UPS store and they'll hook you up with the packaging you need for about 10 dollars. It was worth it to get it back in a week. http://support.xbox.com/support/en/...ort/en/us/nxe/registerdevice.aspx?step=repair
As its been said, you are most probably still covered for RROD. When mine finally got it about 3 months ago, the turn around time was about 7 days once I shipped it. Add 3 days if you ask them to send you a box.
I'd definitely send it in. My disc tray started making a grinding noise and eventually stopped playing game discs two weeks ago, but my warranty ran out about 4 months ago (after having the RROD twice in a 3 yr period). I called Xbox just to see what would happen and they fell all over themselves getting a box to me so that I could send it in. The tech I spoke to gave his supervisor my cell phone# and I received several calls from him checking to see if the box got to me and when I'd be sending it out. Also got a call the day after it arrived back to me and another call a couple of days later to make sure it had been working properly. (he also tried to get them to send me a new XBox but it didn't work out) It seems like they're trying to care of the original 360 owners a little more
Fill out the online form telling them that you have the condition that calls for a free replacement even if it is out of warranty (I don't remember which one it is). They don't check.
I got my third RROD but when I tried to fill out the online replacement form it said my serial number is already in use. Anyone know what's up? I guess I'll have to call.
Watch the videos by Xbox360Fix. If you already have all the tools, it should only take an hour or two to fix it. This is what I did a few months ago when mine got the RROD. It saves money and time to fix it yourself especially if the warranty expired. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bo2dl2vlwis&feature=PlayList&p=B1B123C549EA371F&index=0&playnext=1
