Well, as mentioned in the "What Did You Get" thread I got a new laptop for Christmas but I am sure I am not the only one who got a new laptop or PC. I am needing assistance on a few things getting my laptop accustomed to how I want it. I have my wireless Internet/network going which was the main thing I wanted to hook-up and have running but there are a few other things I want to do. Here is the list:

    1. Is there anyway to transfer files from my PC to my laptop? As said, I have my wireless running so if I can do it through that it would be great if not what do I need to do. I really just want my music files on my laptop.

    2. I received a new photo printer too with my laptop and already have another printer hooked up to my PC. Once I get both hooked up and installed to my PC, how do I make them accessible to my laptop or how can I print from my laptop to them?

    3. What programs do you recommend I download for my laptop and install?

I think that is all for now but new questions could arise. Thanks for any help you guys can give me.

Since everything is running on your wireless router they are going to be able to be accessed with a few easy steps. First make sure that both computers are part of the same workgroup. (You don't necessarily have to do this but it makes it a bit easier.) If you don't know how to do this let me know and i will let you know.

    1. Once you have them on the same network, go to your PC that has the music and right click on the folder that you want to share your data, for example the Music Folder. Go down to properties, click on the Sharing Tab. Towards to the bottom you will see a check box for Share this folder on the network. Go ahead and check that. At this point you should be able to go to your laptop and go into My Network places and see the actual folder show up there. If you dont see it then you can click on "View Workgroup Computers" on the left hand side and find the name of the PC, double click on it and view any shared folders and then just drag and drop into the Laptop.

    2. For the printers, it is the same exact process. Just go into your printers folder on the PC that they are connected and right click on it and basically share the printer onto the network. Once you have shared it then you can search for the printer just like i said how to search for the folder and right click and click on connect, or double click on it and it will install the necessary files. From there you can use the printer on the network and print from your laptop.

If you have more specific questions let me know and i will break it down for you.

    3. Software i always install are the following:

Free AVG - Antivirus instead of Norton or anything. It doesn't use much in way of resources so it doesn't slow down your computer.

Windows Defender - Great at getting spyware, but some use it in conjuction with other spy software.

All the windows updates for sure

    winzip or winrar
    winamp
    firefox

Im sure there are more but depends on what your using it for.

When I bring up computers on my network, my son's computer doesn't show up any more. It did yesterday. When I tried to add it back just now I got an error without an explanation. I'm totally lost at this point.

BTW, he's still connected to the internet using the wireless router.

If you don't mind, please go ahead and tell me how to make them part of the same work group and I will do that. Thanks a bunch. I can't wait.

Oh, and on my laptop there is a sticker that says:

    Intel Core Duo

    How good is that?

    1) Right-click "My Computer"
    2) Select "Properties"
    3) Go to "Computer Name" tab
    4) Hit the "Change" button
    5) Top Blank is a custom name for whatever computer you're using at the moment, Bottom Blank is the Workgroup name. Just use the same workgroup name for both computers. Once this is set, follow the sharing instructions above and then start transferring! Best of luck.

Also, as an added bonus, if you want to get a little more functionality of having a laptop and desktop, start reading about VNC. It allows you to use your laptop anywhere outside of your home network to get access to your home desktop's files and such. I use it for when I bring my laptop to class - if I need a file from my desktop at home, I VNC to my desktop and snag them.

I also like creeping out my gf when she's using my desktop. All of a sudden, I start opening windows and typing "ghost messages" using her cursor.

Try using the "Add a network place" wizard.
You may have to enter the following in the prompt when it asks you to locate the place:

    \\ [Your PC's Name] \ [Your Shared Folder's Name]

of course, fill in the blanks with the appropriate names, and without brackets and without the spaces i put in between the slashes.

I'll give you $7.35 for it.

It still says I don't have permission to access my son's computer. It lists both of our computers in the workgroup but I can't touch his.

Both computers are running Windows XP Professional. Somebody told me that only XP Home can share files over a workgroup. I am pretty sure that is not true and would be one of the dumbest things Microsoft has done.

You are correct on XP Pro. Pro is OK with sharing.

Not sure as to what's up with permissions. Maybe your sharing method went amiss.

Go to your PC, right-click the folder you want to share, and hit "Sharing and Security." On the Sharing Tab that pops up, make sure "Make this Folder Private" is NOT checked and that "Share this folder on the network" IS checked. This should set your file permissions at a medium level.
Then, at the bottom, make sure your PC's firewall (if you're using Windows Firewall) is set to allow connections. If you have another firewall system, then you'll have to set that to allow it, search for help in the program to find out how to enable file sharing.

    hth.

I've done this and it still won't allow me to access the other computer, saying I don't have permission even though both PCs show up when I "view workgroup computers".

Right click on the Document folder on the PC that is hosting the file. Go to sharing and Security and click on the button that says share this folder. Hope this works

Tried that. None of "shared" folders on my son's PC show up on the network.

I also get the same message as Lil Pun.

I have also tried turning off my Windows firewall on the hosting PC but was unable to do anything as well.
