Hey.... I have a question for everyone out there. Recently, my wife's laptop died and went to computer heaven (or hell.) We basically had to reformat the hard drive, which meant we lost all of our music, documents, and pictures, including tons of pics of our newborn baby. Regardless, I have a question regarding the music. Most of the music I have uploaded on two different iPods. Is it possible to get the music off my iPod back onto to the computer? Furthermore, if I put more music on the laptop now and try to sync it with my iPod, will it erase all the stuff I have on my iPod if I don't have EVERYTHING on my iPod back on my computer. I've been afraid to try things since I don't know what will happen, and I don't want to lose the tons of stuff already on my iPod. And yes, I know I should have backed up the music I bought to an external drive or something! That is probably one of our next purchases, at this point. Any help or feedback is appreciated.
1. It depends on what kind of iPod you have. If you have the Touch, you could jailbreak it and ssh into it and get your music. Usually it takes a long time because Apple doesn't want you be able to. 2. You can put new music in it without erasing. When you plug in your iPod, cancel the sync. Click on your device, and you'll three check boxes under options. Check manually manage music and video.
There is software out there that will take the music and put it on to the new hard drive. Google for it. Copypod at least used to be the one of choice, but things change.
Anapod Explorer will do the trick, but the key is to install Apapod BEFORE you install iTunes. Run Anapod, retrieve the files from your iPod. Then, once the files are copied off, you can remove Anapod (my experience is that Anapod and iTunes don't like to be on the same computer) and install iTunes. Then, re-import the files into you iTunes library. You might lose playlists and song ratings, but the files will be there. Copypod used to work, too, though I haven't used it in quite a while, so things may have changed.
With respect to this part, iTunes is really good about backing up all of your stuff to a DVD and then it is simple to restore to another computer. Just go to File->Library->Back up to Disc From there you can back up everything, only backup purchased data or do a progressive backup.
I use sharePod to get all my files off my 5th gen iPod. I've been happy with its performance so far. It doesn't matter if you already have iTunes installed, or if its running at the same time (at least I don't remember it complaining about that). And it will copy playlists and photos too.
I'm almost certain, you can put the ipod into "disk mode" (not sure about the touch) and then copy the files over (you may need to have windows "Show Hidden Files"). Once you do that, set itunes to import/manage your music (It'll rename/move to Artist/album folders on your PC automagically). That should allow it to rename your music from the ID3 tags, and you'll be in business. Maybe...I did that with my brother's iPod a few years back.
download podutil onto your new pc and you can pull all of your music from your ipod onto your new computer
don't bother with all the software specifically designed to rip music from your ipod to the computer...download winamp and install the ipod plugin, it does it for you effortlessly.
Wow....sounds like I do have some options. Was sorta assuming it was a lost cause, but then again, i figured there were some smart people on the BBS, as usual. Thanks, ladies and gents! I'll try one (or more, if needed)of these things out, and hope for the best!
I think those only work with back then Ipods? Not so sure myself, but I am 100 percent sure that doesn't work with an iPod touch. They disabled/made the option go away.
I actually have an iPod nano and a 120 gb iPod Classic, so hopefully sharepod will work with them. Downloaded the software, but don't have time right now to see if it works. Sounds like a lot of people vouche for it, though. Thanks again, people. Hopefully all will go off without a hitch.
So, I tried the sharepod thing but it looked like it cost $20. That's not an unreasonable amount, but I just wanted to ask if that's normal, or if there is a way to transfer all the music using just the standard version? Meggo.....any advice? Are any of the other options free of charge? I'm not opposed to paying, but prefer free if it's an option.
I just followed this video (aka its free): <object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/FtRFsX6FBVo&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/FtRFsX6FBVo&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object> Hope that helps
WTH? It's free, man. Where did you pay? I hope you haven't paid... or you're not getting the real SharePod. http://www.getsharepod.com/download/ "... SharePod is free..."
