My wireless connection is going about as fast as dial up internet right now.

I used to have a Linksys B Wireless router and it started slowing down. I then got a Linksys G router for a Vonage connection, and it is going slower than ever.

Sometimes it just cuts off for a while.

I use Linksys B USB wireless hubs.

Any suggestions to speed up my connection? I've tried resetting my wireless modem several times, and it doesnt seem to do the trick in the long term.

My wired computers are going at normal broadband speeds.

I have no viruses because I just reformatted this comp.

    I'm going crazy.

    Help please.

Try updating the drivers on the wireless NIC and updating firmware for the router.

Ensure you are using the latest firmware for your wireless router and the latest driver for your wireless card(s) on your PCs. Virtually every peice of hardware I've bought from a store had outdated drivers on the CD in the box by the time I purchased it.

Another thing to try is temporarily turn off all the security on your wireless router. Often, the WPA and WES encryption itself severly slows performance. If that is true in your case, you can acheive security by hiding the SSID and enabling MAC address filtering.

How far are you from the router?

are you sure your neighbors are stealing your bandwidth? Is your wireless network secured?

My signal strength varies from "Very Good" to "Excellent." So not too far from the router.

I tried updating the drivers, not helping with speed much.

I went to speedtest and got a result of 262.5 kilobits per second. It rated as "Mediocore."

I know no one is leeching my signal either.

    Any other suggestions?

I'm sure my neighbors arent stealing my connection. The homes in my street are far apart from each other.

I was reading online, that if the base computer that is wired has some sort of virus it could slow down the network. Is this possible?

Try to hook your compouter directly to the broadband router (no wireless) and do a speed test then. At least that will help you rule out your wireless connection as the culprit (doesn't sound like thats the problem).

Again, try turning off any encryption...just for troubleshooting. Encryption adds a lot of overhead.

Yea, I turned off all encryption and firewalls. Still didnt help.

The wierd thing is I have two computers set up wirelessly. One of them goes much faster than the other, even though they have the same type of wireless adapter.

Well, as somebody eles suggested, you may have a virus or spyware. If other machines on the network are running okay, it sounds like a local problem on that one PC. Try running one OR preferably TWO anti-spyware apps.

Also, you might have too many memory resident applications installed...most of which are probably unnecessary things...aka spyware/malware.

Every application these days installs its own auto-updater. For example, Quicktime has a memory resident program that checks to make sure it is up to date. Multiply this by all the apps on that PC and over time it kills systems. Off hand, others that I know personaly do the same:
    Acrobat Reader
    MS Messenger
    Windows Media Player
    Realtime Player
    Java
    + many many others

Obviosly Windows Update and your anti-virus apps do that same. Pick and chose which ones you want auto-updating and disable the rest. May not fix your problem but a pet-peeve of mine anyway.

You might want to give the 15 day trial super ad blocker anti-spyware a try, it really helped me out to speed up things.
