[HELP] WinXP Laptop won't boot up after updates installed

Two nights ago my computer restarted itself to install a few windows updates it had downloaded automatically. Well, ever since then, it has not been able to boot past the Windows screen (i.e., instead of going forward to the Login screen, it starts the boot process over).

after every try, it brings up a screen asking me if i would like to try:
1) Safe Mode
2) Safe Mode with Networking
3) Safe Mode with Command Prompt

or

4) Last Working Configuration

or

5) Start Windows Normally.

i've tried every option, but to no avail.

i didn't have a Windows XP CD with me, so i looked for and found a version of win XP online, using my PC (which is what i'm on right now). initially, i made the mistake of burning it as a data disc, realized my mistake after it didn't work, then re-burned it as an Image, i think. then i went into BIOS and changed the boot sequence so that it'd try the CD first, but it's not making one lick of a difference.

any help is appreciated. being able to access everything i have on my laptop is crucial, and i'm running out of ideas.

If I got to the point where nothing worked with respect to booting, I'd reinstall Windows from my CD and choose the option where it left my files alone. I would make sure I have my CD rather than something downloaded from the internet due to the "unknowness" of what was downloaded.

Yeah seems like your bootup is fine, and your BIOS is fine, its just your windows copy thats corrupted. You'll need to reinstall windows completely or try to "Repair" it with the XP disc.

Also if it's not bootin from disc i would suspect the disc isn't properly burned or a corrupt file as well.
