I wanted a tattoo very, very badly. I still do, as a matter of fact.

However, an adult that I know informed me that if you have a tattoo, hospitals will refuse to give you X-Rays in the tattooed area.

    Just something to think about.

The most cliche tattoos are tribal and chinese characters (and butterflies on girls). If you are going to get a tat, get one that not every other rebellious teen has. Pick something in your life that has meaning and get a tat that represents it, like a cross or your wife's face, or the Rockets logo or something.

Yeah, but I minored in Anthropology in college, and spent a significant amount of those classes studying Mayan history. Further, my wife majored in Anthropology and took classes in those areas. While neither of us are experts by any means, we went to Guatemala and Belize on our honeymoon (including Tikal and Chitchen Itza) and I think it would be an excellent life long reminder of some of the best days of my life - so, rebellious teen or not, it would have meaning for me.

Word. Chinese characters are so overplayed. I know at least 5 people personally who have them. I don't understand why they can't get it in Arabic, German, or whatever besides Chinese. It's not as if others can actually read it (unless they know chinese). hell, none of those people i know can even read their own characters. for all they know, it could say, "I'm a sh*thead".

I agree with the first part of this, but would like to point out that everyone gets crosses these days, too.

Personally, I want my last name tattooed along the base of my neck, from directly below the right ear to the front center of the neck.

I've been told to get something that symbolizes me and that I wouldn't mind waking up to every morning. Barring my involvement in the witness protection program, my last name will always be there. Represent yourself.

The wife's face is a good idea. Or a child.

Please not in German. The words would be so long you'd have to wrap them around your arm a couple of times. The beauty of the chinese character is that you can mush a couple of words in a relatively small space. I have seen some people with Gaelic words on their arms and back, though. I think the idea is that it is "cool" to explain to others what your symbol means.

I think the reason is that the characters are just so beautiful. Every word tells a story by it self.

No, can't say I've seen that before, but then with the things I've seen people do, I don't put anything past them. :)

My daughter and one of her friends got tatoos upon their HS graduation. They each got one of those lower back tatoos.

They had it custom designed in the memory of a friend of theirs who died in a car wreck just before the start of their junior year-- really sweet kid.

I can't tell you much about the design because I haven't studied it that closely...

my two cents would be to not just pick out some random design, but something that has meaning to you or tells some kind of story. dont just get a tat for the sake of getting one, as you will probably regret the design later. i have one where this is the case. its a cool design, but not much thought was put into it. my other, less artisitc ones mean more cause they symbolize something.

mayan designs would be cool (i have a sun myself).

do research and ask around about who does good work. you dont want to go to a crappy artist or someones apprentice (especially if you are getting a complicated design). good people usually have a waiting list and there is a reason that they do.

I'm 32, and I've never had a tattoo. Never could think of anything I'd want 20 years from now.

I have been thinking recently of getting one. I'm trying to find a tattoo that would have a symbol merging the Oiler's logo with the Texan's Logo.

    Any suggestions?
