My brother is going to be coming to UT for a campus visit later this month. He is coming from out of state with my folks, and my wife and I are going to be meeting him in Austin. Can anyone tell me what the "official" visit will include and what I might want to show him while we're there? He's pretty excited about the visit. Thanks in advance.
Never had an official visit, so I cannot tell you what it involves. But....show them the city. Show them the Capitol area, Barton Springs, the Lake. After your folks and your wife go to bed, show him Sixth street.
I am finishing up at UT this semester in business school if you want any advice. I dont know what the official visit actually shows you to be honest, but what school is he going to? As far as other things in austin 6th street is a must to see even if hes not 21, can actually go into the bars with your parents I think.
The visit will probably include a campus tour that highlights the history and highlights of the campus. Later he'll probably meet with an Engineering faculty advisor, who goes over the curriculum and coursework options. Tell him to walk down the Drag, grab a Championship t-shirt from the co-op, and maybe a smoothie from Jamba Juice. For lunch, he can hit up Hula Hut on Lake Austin with your parents, or check out County Line BBQ on the lake. Also, walking 6th St is entertaining, so he should do that as well. If the weather's warm your family should head down to Town Lake Park, relax, and check out the Stevie Ray Vaughn statue.
Yeah I visited UT. Went to the official campus tour / information session. As far as I can remember, First you go to an "information session" where an admissions counsellor talks to a group of you about the application process to UT, what is generally required to get in, etc. You get to ask questions, blah blah blah. I think it lasted like an hour to hour and a half. Then I went on a tour of the business school...you can just go to the business school and sign up for tours that day. And they give an info session and then a tour. Then I went on the official "campus tour" which is a student I think (cant really remember) taking you all around campus and to the facilities (like the big ass gym they got.) So it starts in the morning and ends in the afternoon, dont think it took up all day or anything. Of course, I ended up not going to UT, but whatever.
Why that's quite mature of you! Not that I have this problem (quite the opposite, in fact), but really a small penis isn't a dude's problem. It's his woman's problem!
No, I think only people who know they won't be able to stay on the court go to the Rec. (Actually, I probably go to the rec as much as I do Greg, I hate waiting...)
I think the College of Engineering may do a tour of their own. I would contact them, because he'll definately want a tour of the engineering facilities.
This website may help...website Check out the Student Affairs office and they probably have a tour. I did Mechanical Engineering at UT.
these official tours are horrible. i remember my dad and I walking around with the group for about 2 minutes until my dad looked at me and went "this is stupid, we can walk around and look at things without all these other people." and that's exactly what we ended up doing.
I never took an official tour either, but I'd been up several times and decided long ago that I wanted to go there. I didn't really care about the buildings. Most of the ones they showed at fresh. orientation I never had a class in. If he's into sports, you can take him to the stadium and to the Erwin Center... the admissions building is right there on MLK at Red River, on the Erwin Center Grounds... Might hit that place up, just to see where exactly your lil bro lies within the masses applying. Everyone's suggestions seem pretty good. DEFINITELY hit up the Spider House for some coffee in the evening. for more ideas
self-guided tour is probably better. if he ends up coming here, he'll go to orientation and learn it all. points of interest: 1. the co-op on guadalupe for some gear. 2. walk down the drag, and down 21st towards the stadium... 3. gregory gym 4. the tower 5. the stadium off campus: 1. 6th street + stubb's/emo's show usually 18&up 2. south congress, south lamar, barton springs 3. lake austin blvd (mozart's coffee and hula hut) 4. rudy's bbq (3 locations) 5. rowing/running by town lake 6. whole foods and waterloo on 6th/lamar
I liked playing in the Rec because they have the regulation-sized full courts. Also, I didn't have to wait hours to use their equipment at the Rec.
It is, I had it for lunch today. Crappy weather, but the food more than made up for it. Thanks everyone for the tips. My brother's visit is tomorrow, but we spent the weekend looking around. He's hitting both the Engineering and Architecture schools and is more amped now then he was before getting to Austin. We went to the Co-Op and loaded him up with gear and I even bought a shirt. Does that make me a T-Shirt fan now? Thanks again.
