One is a desk top which I connect my modem and router to, the other is a laptop which I'm trying to connect to the network which I can't. How on earth do I do this. What brand/model router?

For my setup I have my modem's line out (what you normall plug into your desktop ethernet card I'm guessing) plugged into the router's internet in port. The router connects to the internet through the modem and then each computer gets on the network created by the router by connecting either wired or wirelessly...

To log into your router open internet explorer on your DESKTOP and the IP to your router should be 192.168.0.1,type it into the URL bar of IE and hit enter. A login box will pop up and the username is probably admin and the default password is password. Select YES from the setup wizard, and then hit NEXT. If you are using PPPOE (SBC DSL) you'll need to enter your username and password and change the idle timeout to 0 (ZERO). HERE is your router's install guide.

After you set that up make sure to change your default password for your router to something other then password. You can also change your SSID (name of your wireless signal) to something other the DEFAULT, such as your last name... this is key if you live in a neighborhood with a lot of wireless networks. You might also want to set up WEP or WPA (encryption) so only you can connect via your wireless connection.

    Extra URLs that may help
