Got a new computer for my son. Also got a Linksys wireless G router (WRT54G) which I hooked up to my computer with a wire. Also got Linksys wireless G USB network adapter for the new computer. I've set up the new computer to get wireless internet access via the router. It's also encrypted so no neighbors can leech. What I want to do now is be able to share files and data between the two computers. Primarily, I want to be able to access my son's hard drive (200GB) from my computer (only 40GB). Using the Wireless Network Setup Wizard, Windows copies (whatever) on to a USB media drive which I put in the new computer and then re-insert back into my computer. I get an error message directing me to article 871122 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. The article: ______________________ Error message when you try to run the Wireless Network Setup Wizard after you update to Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 View products that this article applies to. Article ID : 871122 Last Review : October 6, 2005 Revision : 2.2 INTRODUCTION The Wireless Network Setup Wizard and the View Available Wireless Networks feature both rely on the Wireless Zero Configuration service to provide their functionality to Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and Microsoft Windows XP Table PC Edition 2005. If the Wireless Zero Configuration service is not available, you receive an error message that directs you to this article. Back to the top Back to the top MORE INFORMATION This behavior occurs for several reasons. Some computer and hardware manufacturers provide their own configuration software that replaces the Wireless Zero Configuration service that is provided in Windows. In that case, you must use the software that is provided by the manufacturer to configure your wireless network. If you want to use the Wireless Network Setup Wizard or the View Available Wireless Networks feature to configure your wireless device, see the documentation that came with your computer or with your wireless network card. Use this documentation to determine whether you can use the Wireless Zero Configuration service to configure your wireless network. Sometimes, you cannot use the Windows functionality. If your computer or your wireless network adapter did not come with its own wireless network software, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, click Run, type ncpa.cpl, and then click OK. 2. Click Network Connections. 3. In Network Connections, click to select your wireless connection, and then click Change settings of this connection. 4. On the Wireless Networks tab, click to select the Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings check box. To start the Wireless Zero Configuration service, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, click Run, type %SystemRoot%\system32\services.msc /s, and then click OK. 2. Double-click Wireless Zero Configuration. 3. In the Startup type list, click Automatic, and then click Apply. 4. In the Service status area, click Start, and then click OK. If you receive an error message when you try to start the service, see the "References" section for more troubleshooting information. __________________________________ I bolded the problem. There is no "Wireless Networks" tab on my sons computer after I follow step 3. My computer is an old Sony Vaio and I'm happy with it. My son's new computer is a Compaq Presario. Anyone know what I should do? Thanks.
I posted this in Lil Puns post because it's basically the same thing. Since everything is running on your wireless router they are going to be able to be accessed with a few easy steps. First make sure that both computers are part of the same workgroup. (You don't necessarily have to do this but it makes it a bit easier.) If you don't know how to do this let me know and i will let you know. 1. Once you have them on the same network, go to your PC that has the music and right click on the folder that you want to share your data, for example the Music Folder. Go down to properties, click on the Sharing Tab. Towards to the bottom you will see a check box for Share this folder on the network. Go ahead and check that. At this point you should be able to go to your laptop and go into My Network places and see the actual folder show up there. If you dont see it then you can click on "View Workgroup Computers" on the left hand side and find the name of the PC, double click on it and view any shared folders and then just drag and drop into the Laptop. 2. For the printers, it is the same exact process. Just go into your printers folder on the PC that they are connected and right click on it and basically share the printer onto the network. Once you have shared it then you can search for the printer just like i said how to search for the folder and right click and click on connect, or double click on it and it will install the necessary files. From there you can use the printer on the network and print from your laptop.
Sorry, I replied in the other thread by mistake. After messing around, when I "view workgroup computers", my son's computer now shows up. Clicking on it's icon yields the reply, "\\[name of pc] is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found." Now what?
Run the network setup wizard on both PC's, making sure the settings for each are idendtical. Also, you can install the netbios protocol on both computers (sometimes it makes a difference). Its in the same place you view your tcp/ip protocol settings. Finally, it takes a few minutes for your resources to be accessed by each computer... so even though you've turned sharing on, and are sharing multiple files, it will still take 5-10 minutes for the computers to be able to "talk" freely to one another.
