Anybody have any luck reducing or minimizing scars? I have a rather large fresh scar from a recent operation and was wondering what sort of tips would help reduce the scar. Any products? both over the counter and prescribed? I've heard a diet with lots of Vitamin E helps, as well as avoiding certain types such as seafood. I've done some research online and found out 'scar massages' from a massage therapist may help soften scars and reduce 'adhesions'. Any recommendation in form of diet, products, or 'activities/therapys' would help. Also any which expert should I consult for this type of advice? I'm afraid my surgeon would not be an expert in scar and skin issues so I may have to consult a dermatologist?
The best cure, unfortunately, is time. My scar is barely noticeable now, whereas it was decently keyloid right after my surgery. I think in terms of actual stuff to use, I'd go with the vitamin E recommendation, also.
Thanks! I heard Mederma is pretty good. I might try that. The nurse today recommended Aquaphor. Anybody know how these compare?
I have a scar on the left side of my face near my mouth from when a dog attacked me 17 years ago. I had cosmetic surgery on it about 5 years ago, and I did use Mederma for awhile, and now it's barely noticeable.
My daughter was attacked last year (age 3 - facial lacerations/puncture)... If you don't mind sharing here, at what age were you attacked, and then what age was the surgery? We're trying to get the insurance of the people who owned the dog to settle.
I was also attacked when I was three, by my aunt's English Sheepdog up in Michigan. The scar did heal well, although when I would smile there wouldn't be a crease from my nose to the side of my mouth on the side of the scar. When I was around age 13-14 my parents took me to a cosmetic surgeon in Houston who made a "zig-zag" cut along the scar...it's weird how that worked so well...and by the time I started high school it was barely noticeable at all. I can't remember a time I actually noticed it when I looked in the mirror. My dad always tells me we could've gotten a better settlement had the attack happened in Texas, but considering my scars healed so well, it didn't really matter to me.
Thanks for the info. Glad it ended well. My daughter's is now only really noticeable when she smiles... which she does a lot, so we'll have to see about a "fix" at some point. We most likely will have to take the insurance company to court though. The plastic surgeon we have has spelled it all out... costs, etc... and the insurance says they won't pay unless it's done. The surgeon has suggested waiting until a similar age as you did, but the insurance will only pay what it would cost now. I hate insurance. But the hardsest part is hearing my daughter talk about it nearly every 2-3 weeks. That infuriates me toward the negligence of the dog owner. They moved to Alabama, and were allowed to take their "pet" with them after just a 10 day quarantine.
My parents would emphasize with you. The dog that attacked me was given away to a foster home. My parents were calling for it to be put to sleep. I'm still not sure how I feel about it but from a parent's perspective I can see whay you would find that ridiculous.
two months ago i was playing soccer at the park. . yikes i know. anyway, whoever allows the first goal of the game, your team has to remove their shirt and be skins. and i allowed the goal in. but man, i went up to the dude, because dude had the ball, and he pushed agaisnt my stomach, and his nails scratched me up pretty good. it was a girly deep finger nail scratch, but it was bleeding pretty good. it's kinda gone away, but it looked really neat at the time. i have one on my back from playing basketball. it was at this mormon church near jones and west rd. and at the end of the court they have a bulletin board. and the border is made out of wood. it was a fastbreak, and i went up for a layup with some guys on me, (and i missed it) but uh, yeah, i backed into it, and the bottom of the bulletin board cut through my shirt, and cut my back pretty good. that scar is still on there. it's about a one inch cut. i have a scar on my left index finger. i was working at a grocery store, and i was in the produce department. and i was doing something with the lettuce with a dull knife, and i had a bad deep cut on my finger. the messed up thing was when i went to go wash it, i noticed it would not stop bleeding. to top it off, the front of the store was real busy with shoppers, and they needed me to check out the customers. as i was checking out, my finger kept on bleeding, and i wrapped it with paper towels so blood wouldnt get on anything. i ended up going to the emergency room that day to stop the bleeding. the end.
