I dunno what it is my girlfriends SBC Yahoo Dsl is running slow when she tries to check her email and some pages..... It's not fast like they say or is their something else wrong? She has an Intel Celeron D processor but I dunno if that would be the problem... Any suggestions would really help! Thanks!
if you are semi-computer literate, go to http://www.dslreports.com and look for their TOOLS section. In there they have tweaks and tests to speed up your DSL. While your at dslreports, you can also do a speed test and check to see how far you are from the DSL hub near your house. If you are pretty far, that could be a reason for slow connections. The true test is to see how slow your connection really is... do a speed test and if you are surfing around 600Kbps or more, then you are surfing at about average speed for DSL. Also, when's the last time you scanned for spyware/adware/malware?? If the answer is never, that too, could be your problem... go here: http://www.geekradio.com/spyware and run all three programs recommended. When I had problems with my DSL, I had SBC come out and rebuild my phone box outside (the connection from the street to my house), that significantly upgraded my service since the box was pretty old. This wasn't free. There are a lot of reasons for slow DSL, some may not even be repairable by you, so these steps are a good start. Good luck.
Did you try both with the same computer, from the same house, from the same login, from the same user on the Windows machine? If not, the world may never know... that would be the only way to compare what you "have found" - jk I have DSL in Katy and it breezes just fine. I think it is something else. You had me at "celeron". No, connection speed is NOT the same as processor speed, but it is a factor when you're on a computer that downloads faster than it processes. Check the reports SIN-ergy mentioned above.
Go to http://2wire.com to run a test. But my hunch tells me it's spyware/adware running on her computer.
A Celeron is pretty bad when it comes to programs like Bit Torrent, Kazaa or Edonkey. That will be your bottleneck if you're running them. One way to find out is to restart your computer and manually turn off all junk programs. Then goto this site to get your speed checked. http://reviews.cnet.com/7007-6906_7...MB&size=2636408.00000&pid=10319876&CType=2277 Download all the patches for windows because of worms. Download a spyware scanner, and clean the computer out. The firewall could also be a problem. After everything else, reset the DSL modem.
My sbc dsl was running real slow also so i contacted sbc and they came over and tried to fix it yesterday. They said like a cord was configuered wrong and as wind blew the internet slowed down and disconnected. They said to keep the cord thing stable the company degraded my connection. They said they would fix it today. Just call them and ask them what to do. Plus- The repair man helped me get some internet on my other computer but not the sbc way.
