So I'm dog sitting this 3 month old husky for a friend for 2 weeks. He is the cutest thing ever. But he has this habit taking away and chewing my flip flops, shoes, boots etc. that are lying around. I tried taking it away and scolding it, but all it does is bark back at me and run away. But after awhile it goes back and chews it again. I tried spanking it lightly, but he seems to think I'm just playing with him, and goes back to chewing it an hour later.... Anyways, this morning, he purposely grabbed my boots laid it in front of me, chewed it for like 2 seconds and ran away.... What do I have to do to discipline it, I don't want to hurt it physically. I don't have any previous experience with dogs, any advice from dog owners.
Spray bottles sometimes work with dogs. They definitely do with cats. My lab loves water, but he hated getting squirted with it when he chewed on stuff. Unfortunately the best way to deal with puppies is steady positive reinforcement over time, which doesn't really apply to you.
that puppy needs to run around and play for like a solid hour. i have a 14 month golden lab who has seemingly unlimited energy. when i take her to the dog park and let her wear herself out, she stops being annoying and needy and chewing **** into a million pieces and instead spends the whole day lying around lazily.
You need to buy it a toy and show him that's what he should be chewing on. Its perfectly natureal for it to want to chew on something, so you're not likely to get it to stop.
Dog is probably teething and needs something to chew on. I had tons of chew toys and bones for my puppies during that stage...so they wouldn't resort to chewing my shoes. I remember it got so bad for me I had to put up chicken wire around the trees cause the dogs were eating the bark off the trees. Go get one of those chew toys that hold treats and makes it a puzzle for the dog. Every dog is different as far as what they want to chew on. Noone should own a puppy and not provide stuff to chew on...unless they want everything else in their house to be chewed on. Puppies have to be watched just like children. No telling what they will get into.
sounds like the dog has parvo. sounds like the dog thinks it's a game...he could just be bored. Try to puppy proof as much as possibly, to prevent it from happening to begin with (obviously). Make sure he has plenty of chew toys. Next time he does it give him a good hard "NO!", then replace your shoe with one of his towns. If he plays with that, give him praise.
this too, he/she's full of energy. You nee to make sure they get a lot of exercise. A dog park's a good idea because he can get acclimated to being around other dogs
Is this thread a joke? Puppies chew stuff. Puppies want your attention. Put your stuff up, play with the dog.
I owned a yellow lab, you're right. You got to let them play and run around until they're a bit tired and they'll be a lot calmer.
what others have said - rawhide bones for chewing and take him out and play w/ him to wear him out. sounds like the owner is not properly disciplining their pup - when you catch it chewing on something it isnt supposed to be chewing on spank it hard and say "NO!" while making it look at the thing it was chewing. they will figure it out pretty quick.
I have a husky with the same problem, buy this it works http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2754400
I remember one of my dogs was chewing the lamp electrical cord that was plugged when I busted her. She was about one second of chew time from actually breaching the rubber shield into the copper wire before I stopped her. No telling what would have happened. Some sad stories of dogs getting messed up doing that.
Bitter Apple may work too. Spray it on your flip flops and he might be turned off by the taste. Or he may love it, you never know! Oops...didn't follow the link until after the fact...but yeah it seems to work.
Roll up a newspaper and whenever he starts chewing your shoes hit him on either the nose or butt with it. Dogs hate the noise of loud crumpled up newspaper coming at them.
Play with the puppy, hide things it should not being chewing on and have a crate on hand for when you cannot keep an eye on it every second. This is a phase they go through so don't expect to be able to prevent it in the next year. Some dogs are chewers. I have a 2 year old AB/DS mix that still chews if I turn my back on him. He even eats the big Kong toys in under 20 minutes.
Thnx for the advice guys, I will try the finding the spray thing. Yeah it has plenty of chew toys to play with, it's just it gets bored of each one really quickly and finds everything it gets his paws on to play with. i have to say though, from this experience I'm not getting a dog in the future, as cute as it is, it is way too exhausting. If I don't walk it every 3-4 hours, it pees in the house.
OH that's what that's for lol He has one, I thought it was just another chew toy, didn't know you are suppose to stuff things in it lol
