So I set up a network last night. Its for two desktops. One wired, one not. It works fine for a few minutes at a time, then the connection just drops. The modem shows it as still connected, but the router doesn't. Its driving me crazy.

It is a cheap router (Belkin Wireless G). I read that it might be the router being overloaded and crapping out. But both computers are only being used to check a few sites. No downloading or anything.

I have nooo idea how to fix it. Any suggestions?

If it is working some of the time, it might be malfunctioning within the router. Can you post what site said you were overloading? Why do you say "cheap"?

Try to connect the wire to ONE computer. See if that one stays connected all the time.

Try the same wire to the OTHER computer. See if the same happens.

Then, try the same by switching the router onto one computer, then the other.

Eliminate the wireless connection, then see what works.

You just might have a bad wire to the wireless router, or a bad wireless router altogether.

I have an old WRT from LinkSys I no longer use because of uVerse. Let me check at home.

Reset the router and update the firmware.
    Then test it again.

It's a WRT54G I am not using. Let's see if your router works for a few days before you have to get another one. Do a few tests with switching the wires or using a new one, and see if that helps. I still think you may have a faulty cable... it's just a hunch...

Try what aeroman10 suggests, too. Also, check out the manufacturer's forums. They may have had updates you don't have.

How did you come across the "cheap" router? I am wondering if someone did "something" to it, and just gave it away...

Also, was this always happening since you got it, or has it just begun?

Oh I just bought it last night at Circuit City. I say cheap cause it was one of the least expensive routers. I updated the firmware like aeroman said and both have been working since then. Hopefully the signal upholds. Thanks guys! :)
