I'm trying to decide on which cities to include in the itinerary. The 2 definite destinations will be Sydney and Perth. But between Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast, I am having trouble deciding. I do not have a problem including all of these choices in the itinerary, but specifically, I am not sure if Adelaide or Brisbane are worth the visit. And I'd rather not add on the unnecessary hassle of extra travel in this already long trip if one of the places isn't worth it. I will be going in the next 10 days, so the cool temperatures and intermittent rain will be a factor as well. Anyone who lives there or has been, your thoughts are appreciated...
It's going to be cold there right now, and the Gold Coast is basically known for its surf/beaches, so keep that in mind. I lived in Melbourne and although there isn't a movie world or seaworld there, there's cool places to visit. If you decide to go be sure to go downtown and just wallk around at night. The last time i visited my friends/ family was a couple of years back, so I have no idea if they have any new attractions there.
Yeah, I went on a student trip the summer before my senior year of high school. We went to a resort, Great Keppel Island. Did some snorkeling and the water was cold. The north coast is supposed to be tropical, so it should still be warm.
Ok - someone who 'lives there' --> what sort of things do you want to see when you are here?? Sydney is a MUST - plenty of things to check out there. But why Perth?? That's about as much 'unnecessary travel' as you can fit in on an Australian holiday! Got people you want to see there or something? In terms of 'tourist stuff' - the Gold Coast and Brisbane are close to each other, and they are pretty well geared for the tourist visit. Gold Coast has a big nightlife scene - and the rolling beaches - but bring your wetsuit - water temp will be around 20C. Melbourne has the shopping scene covered - but it will be about the coldest place - and with Adelaide will be pretty windy at this time of year. Plenty of things to see in Melbourne - but Adelaide is safe to cut if you want to save some travel. Melbourne might not be worth your while either! If you are into swimming/ snorkling, then the Great Barrier reef is a must - book yourself into Cairns and make that a priority to go and see (just watch out for the salt water crocs and the sharks ) If you are into 'nature' then be sure to book an overnight trip to the Blue Mountains (just west of Sydney) - stay in Katoomba and you'll find plenty of nice things to look at there!
The past few days, Melbourne has had some really nice weather (for this time of year). About 20 degrees (not converted into farenheit) but sunny. Of course, being Melbourne the weather can change in about half an hour. But I believe it is asthetically the nicest city in Australia. Sydney is great as well, I haven't been to Perth but I hear it's fantastic. Adelaide isn't bad (I don't have the heart to say anything bad about my home town). If you go there, be sure to go to the Barossa Valley, home of the best wine in Australia. Brisbane would be the best place if you want some warm weather, plus it's tourist friendly. Same goes for the Gold Coast. Personally, I say come down here to Melbourne. As darkwarrior said, it's a great place to walk around at night, Burke Street Mall, Lygon Street, plus heaps of great clubs and bars. And trams.
Isnt Smeg still in Adelaide? last I heard he was...be sure to go by...he has been perfecting the Texas-style BBQ lately..and is always fun to drink with.
You might want to try out this restaurant in Sydney. http://www.tetsuyas.com/index.html It'll be about $250 Aust per person.
yes i am adelaide is great place to come visit, nice and relexed great food and people, and if you are into wine and beer an amazing place to come to
Thanks for all the advice guys.... >--- Dr Neugebauer............I read a lot of good things about Perth especially the climate there, and part of my trip is aimed at looking for a nice place to have a beachhouse built. Anyways I am looking forward to Sydney, but not too sure about Brisbane/Gold Coast since I'm concerned it will be a little TOO touristy and commercialized like Miami Beach and Marbella, for instance. I'm going to save the Great Barrier for another trip, but I will definitely add Katoomba - thanks for suggesting! Also, in Sydney do you recommend that I rent a car? I would prefer to take public transport or taxi's instead since I am certain the whole righthand drive thing is going to get me into an accident >--- darkwarrior and getsmartnow............I will definitely include Melbourne now since I love walking around at nite to check out new cities and bars (although, as usual, my girlfriend is gonna be pissed about having to do so!). She is the one actually interested in checking out the Barossa Valley north of Adelaide. She thinks it's gonna be just like Napa Valley or something. Anyways, is it safe to say that the weather in Adelaide is similar to San Francisco and that of Melbourne is like Seattle? Also, should I rent a car in Melbourne?
Thanks Smeg....is it too late to visit Adelaide weatherwise though? If it's rainy and windy right now (like Dr N mentioned) then it might be better to put it off for the next trip.
Thanks it looks pretty nice.......I'm not a big fan of fusion cuisine, however......something about the mixing of differing flavors and ingredients that I don't feel were ever meant to be combined.....I will eat cuisine from anyplace in the world, as long as it's authentically prepared
Well 4 months out of the year, the beachhouse would be home. Basically from November - March when the weather sucks in the States.
hey Smeg we don't see enough of you around here... send me some tim tams. I'd love to make it down that way some day. My brother in law worked in sydney for a year and I was super envious.
thats a fact...Mr Smeggy been mighty busy I guess...he has been MIA around here lately.. word of advice for dagimp....dont go asking for a Fawsters when ya get there..you'll get the boot for that..
i'm around, in the background lurking when i can anyhoo the winter weather in adelaide will probably be better than most of the southern australian cities, certainly much better than melbourne... it never really gets that cold here and doesn't rain much do NOT go to the gold coast it is like a cross between a cheap ass vegas and galveston bay
