I am a pretty competent computer person but I recently bought an ibook for my wife and I am having a difficult time settup file sharing between a PC laptop and the ibook. Hopefully someone here (Puedlefor? Jeff? Bailey?) has had experience with this issue. I have a wireless router and both laptops have wireless network cards. They are both being assigned IP's via DHCP. The PC is running win2k pro and is assigned 192.168.1.100 and the ibook is 192.168.1.101 so no conflicts there. As a test I created an account on the pc and shared the My Documents folder. I set the sharing permission for that folder to allow my test account to access it. Now I go to the ibook (running os x by the way), go to the finder, and select find server. It finds the workgroup on the laptop, even finds the laptop. I select it, it prompts me to log in with my l/p, and the My Documents folder appears on the desktop of the ibook. "Ah, Success!" I cry. Alas and alack, 'tis not to be. The second I click on the folder it disappears! Further attempts to find the server result in "Error - the server cannot be found (error = -36)" or something pretty close to that. I know the error number is correct. This repeats itself until I reboot the ibook. I can then again access the laptop and get the My Documents folder to appear on the laptop until it disappears when I click on it. I looked on the internet and found several sites that I thougt might be helpful but either none solved my problem or I just didn't understand them. Anyone here have a similar situation and solved it? Surely some crazy person out there has both a PC and a mac? Thanks in advance...
Well, I have a PC and a Mac, but I've never had to share files between them. I have them all set up in the same workgroup to access my router using DHCP, but like I said... haven't had a need to share files between them yet. So there's my non-solution.
Error =-36 means the Windows Box is refusing your connection. Apple has some things to look at in their Tech Info Library: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107096 What all that boils down to is make sure you can share PC -> PC first before attempting a SAMBA share. In particular, check that ports 137,138, and 139 are open.
Firstly, the connection to your PC isn't successful (I know that sounds obvious). The error message you're getting essentially means that the Windows machine is refusing the connection. Here's Apple's brief description of the error I have almost exactly the same setup that you deescribe (WLAN, W2K) and this worked straight out if the box for me. Are you using OS X 10.2? Anyway, I do have a couple of suggestions that might work. When you press Cmd-K to connect to a server, try typing in the address you want to log on to in this format: smb://[ip address of your W2k machine]/[Name of share] I would also suggest ensuring that the share name doesn't have any spaces in it. Of course, there is also a final resort. You could just switching on FTP sharing on the iBook, and then FTP to it from the Windows box. Not very elegant, but if you just want to transfer a couple of files it might save you hassle. Unfortunately, I'm going away for the weekend, and won't be able to check the BBS. I will be checking my e-mail though, so feel free to mail be directly if you need any more help/suggestions.
