ok guys, i am really needing your help here. i am aware that many of you are computer genius', so i will ask for your assistance..... well....i recently have got windows xp, and well, my computer doesnt turn off. i mean i go to the start menu, and i click 'turn off', then when the next screeenc omes up, i click turn off again....... anyway......after i have told my computer to turn off, the screen comes up saying "it is now safe to turn off your computer" but this is where the problem arises. you see, i dont have a button which directly turns off the computer, it usually does it automatically you see. atleast it did with windows 98. before all i had to do was to click 'shut down' and then it would turnoff automatically, then all i had to do was to turn off my moniter. so i am wondering if any of your expertise could help me out please. where can i got to change this,? or is it just a problem with something else. because i know that my matre has xp, and his copmputer turns off automatically, just like mine should, but mine doesnt for some reason. anyway, i hope what i wrote just made sense thanks in advance guys, if any of you can help me out cheers..
Seems strange that there is no manual shut down button.Maybe it's located on the back of the machine ? What kind of computer do you have ?
Yeah that is strange that it don't got a manual shut down button... Where the hell did you get it Kmart.....
Just a guess here, but try holding the button that turns on your computer for 5 seconds. That may end up just reseting your machine, but it's worth a shot. B
You've got an ATX motherboard -- it allows software to control the power -- that way you could (theoretically) go forever without pressing a button -- use the keyboard key to turn it on, and Windows to turn it off. How do you turn yours on, typically? keyboard key? Here's what you should do: On the back of the computer, find where it plugs into the wall. You'll see a fan next to it, and you'll notice that they're both part of the same "unit". That is your "Power Supply" Most ATX power supplies have a manual "on/off" switch. It's black, and has an "O" for off and a " | " for on. Turn it off. That will power it down. Then turn it on when you want to turn on the PC again. Turn it on, then push what you usually press to turn on the PC. It's entirely possible you're using a prefab that doesn't have a power supply switch (emachines, etc.). In that case, just unplug the darned thing. Also, the holding your power button down thing might work sometimes.
There are several known shutdown problems with Windows XPiece-o-poop. If it makes you feel any better, you're not the only one having the problem you're describing. Microsloth is actually looking to put in a fix from what I understand, and it may make it into the first service pack. Try this : In Win XP, go to the My Computer icon, right-click on it, select Properties from the pop-up menu, select Hardware, then Device Manager, then select View from the menu. Select "Show Hidden Devices". See if you see an entry anywhere in the screen now for "APM/NT Legacy Node". Enable this and see if it fixes your problem. It may not, but on one of the machines I had to set up, it did... Another tip involves messing with your BIOS settings (namely the power/ACPI or APM) till the stupid thing works. You wouldn't happen to have EZ CD Creator 5 on your machine would you? And you wouldn't happen to be running DirectCD, would you? Those 2 are among the apps that cause this problem. Vengeance's solution is the only other way I know of to get the thing to power off, but it's a b**** on your switch. Good luck. If I can find anything else, I'll post it here...
Be sure to go to the Windows XP site for the automatic updates. From the Start menu, select 'All Programs' then 'Windows Update' It's pretty cool; it even updated my video card (and they need to get even better drivers for the vid card; it's rebooting my PC).
ok guys, thanks a bundle for all your help. greatly apreciated but a big thanks goes out to B, who has successfully made me look like the most computer illiterate person on the planet "Just a guess here, but try holding the button that turns on your computer for 5 seconds." so now i have another problem......hmmmmm, i wonder if u guys could help me on this one too this isnt it, but does anyone know what a PCI simple comunications controller is?>???
now HERE is my new problem well, ever since the installation of 'xp'..my sound hasnt been working. now i have a mate who is a bit of a wiz on the computer, and he has told me that everything is enabled, so all signs are saying taht the sound should be working. but it isnt . (he suggested that it could be something to do with that simple communications controller, anyway....) so yeh, the sound should be working, but it sint .. and yes be, the speakers ARE turned on haha i have checked that everything is plugged in, so there isnt any problems there, with the cord connections thanks in advance guys, you guys are the best
your sound card might not work with XP or might need a driver update. you can see what kind of card it is in the device manager in control panel, system. then go to that company's website and check if there is an XP driver for that card http://www.driverguide.com is a good resource.
90% of sound problems, sad to say, are people putting the speakrers in the microphone slot. Really. Try plugging through all three and go to the sound control panel and try to make a sound for each plug slot. Does XP still have the little microphone in the tray? I can't remember. If it does make sure nothing is muted.
well guys, ive done it again......... it turns out that my speakers were plugged in to the wrong outlet at the back of the tower................................. BUT they were not plugged into the microphone outlet thank you very much........ i dno y, but tehre are 2 outputs where i can plug the speakers into, they are both audio outlets, but one works, one doesnt. ohwell, again, thanks guys, you rock
