Who is currently the highest paid baseball player? A-Rod 7.) Do you feel there should be a salary cap in baseball? Explain An essay question? Are you kidding me. In short I'd say yes, because I don't like how some teams can't keep a hold of their young talent when they come up for free agency. Oakland for example does all the hard work of developing a couple of excellent starting pitchers and then have to trade them away before they hit the free agent market and they leave for nothing. 8.) Who do you feel is the most influential baseball player of all time? Explain As much as I respect Jackie Robinson, I'd probably say Babe Ruth because he totally transformed how the game is played with his use of the long ball. The home run became the signature play in Baseball, and to this day is a major part of baseball's identity. 9.) Who do you feel is the greatest player of all time? Explain Babe. He was just so far ahead of his time. 10.) What do you believe was Jackie Robinson’s role in baseball? How important do you feel his impacts compare to other important baseball figures? A Bay Area-based company that distributed supplements and other chemical aid to athletes across many sports. They have also been charged with distributing steroids to many of these athletes. 13.) Who is Moses Fleetwood Walker? Don't know. 14.) Who is the Greatest player you have ever seen play? Bonds. 15.) How long have you been following baseball? Off and on for maybe 12 years. Edit: Opps. You wanted me to send a word document. Can you just copy and paste it to your own word doc? Seems easier that way.

With a cap in place, the teams with the highest incomes won't be able to dominate small market teams by signing players to ludicrously high contracts. 8.) Who do you feel is the most influential baseball player of all time? Explain Babe Ruth. He was a colorful character whose name has become synonymous with the game. People still talk about him regularly to this day. 9.) Who do you feel is the greatest player of all time? Explain Willie Mays. Best combination of offense and defense the game has ever seen. 10.) What do you believe was Jackie Robinson’s role in baseball? How important do you feel his impacts compare to other important baseball figures? He opened the floodgates to allow African-Americans into a league that was previously "white-only." His impact was just as important as any other baseball figure. He impacted the game on a social, political and competitive level. 11.) What do you feel were the important events or other important consequences for baseball during the following time periods? The Babe Ruth era – Babe's colorful antics and his tremendous skills turned him into the most remembered baseball player of all time. The year of Jackie Robinson- Robinson paved the way for blacks to play in the Majors. The year of McGuire vs. Sosa- The McGuire/Sosa competition infused some much needed interest into the game at a time when people were getting fed up with baseball because of all the strike/lockout issues. 1.) Which team did the following players play for in the year 2004? Barry Bonds- Morgan Ensberg- Joel Pinero- Roy Oswalt- Migel Tejada- BALCO Bonds - Giants Ensberg - Astros Pineiro - Mariners (?) Oswalt - Astros Tejada - Orioles 6.) Who is currently the highest paid baseball player? That would be the Karate Kid aka Alex "A-Fraud" Rodriguez 7.) Do you feel there should be a salary cap in baseball? Explain Yes, when one team's luxury tax (e.g. Yankees) is more than another team's payroll (e.g. Devil Rays), then something is definitely not right. 8.) Who do you feel is the most influential baseball player of all time? Explain Babe Ruth - he singlehandedly saved baseball from the Black Sox Scandal and his combination of pitching and hitting skills are something we will probably never see again. 9.) Who do you feel is the greatest player of all time? Explain Babe Ruth - see answer above to #8 10.) What do you believe was Jackie Robinson’s role in baseball? How important do you feel his impacts compare to other important baseball figures? To be a pioneer. He was very courageous (had to be) in a time where racial equality was pretty much zilch. His courage by being the first helped open the door to other talented black players. 11.) What do you feel were the important events or other important consequences for baseball during the following time periods? The Babe Ruth era – The year of Jackie Robinson- The year of McGuire vs. Sosa- The Last 3 years of baseball- Babe Ruth era - dead ball era ends, offensive numbers are put up that have never been seen before; baseball recovers from the Black Sox Scandal of 1919 The year of Jackie Robinson - World War II is over, all the stars are back, baseball battles the renegade Mexican League as this new league tries to steal players from the Majors, also thanks to Jackie Robinson's arrival, there is a renewed emphasis on farm systems McGwire vs Sosa - baseball gets the fans back after the disastrous strike of 1994 Last 3 years of baseball - playoffs have been non-stop excitement despite payrolls that continue to grow each year. Is a salary cap eminent? 12.) What is BALCO? Steroid stuff (cream or clear or both) that people like Giambi and Bonds used to cheat 13.) Who is Moses Fleetwood Walker? No idea, maybe a Negro League star? 14.) Who is the Greatest player you have ever seen play? Well, I have only been to a handful of games in person so I will go with what I have seen on television. In my lifetime that I have actually seen in their prime? Tony Gwynn 15.) How long have you been following baseball? over 20 years
A couple of edits from the email I sent; they're italicized. 1.) In your opinion, how would you rate yourself as a baseball fan on a scale of 1-10, with the following being a general scale 6, but it’s been up to 10 before. 2.) Who was the World Series champion in the following years? 2004- Boston 2003- Anaheim? 1996- Atlanta? 1980- Cincinnati? 1947- no idea 3.) Who is the all time leader in the following statistical categories? Career Homeruns- Hank Aaron (yes, I'm normally aware that 755 > 714) Career Steals – Rickey Henderson Career Strikeouts (pitching) – Nolan Ryan Single Season Homeruns – Barry Bonds Career Hits- Pete Rose 4.) Who is the first Black America to play in the Major Leagues? And which year was this in? Jackie Robinson; I’d guess 1947 because you asked about it above and it sounds right, but my first instinct was 1948 (although, going back and rereading my answers, it was Moses Fleetwood Walker in the 1890s or 1900s. (Or maybe 1880s.) I had forgotten about him until you mentioned his name.) 5.) Which team did the following players play for in the year 2004? Barry Bonds- San Francisco Morgan Ensberg- Houston? Joel Pinero- Seattle? Roy Oswalt- Houston Migel Tejada- Baltimore 6.) Who is currently the highest paid baseball player? Alex Rodriguez 7.) Do you feel there should be a salary cap in baseball? Explain Not necessarily; there probably needs to be some sort of revenue redistribution, but that can be done without a salary cap. Effective revenue sharing based on a team’s potential for making income would help. 8.) Who do you feel is the most influential baseball player of all time? Explain As to how the game is played: Babe Ruth. He destigmatized the strikeout to a large degree and got everyone swinging for the fences. As to who played the game: Maybe Jackie Robinson—I can’t say for sure if people looked at him as he played and said, “Hey, I can do that!” It’s possible that the first good foreign-born players (Marichal? Clemente?) had a larger effect. 9.) Who do you feel is the greatest player of all time? Explain Within the context of his era: Babe Ruth. His stats were almost incomparable with those of his contemporaries. 10.) What do you believe was Jackie Robinson’s role in baseball? How important do you feel his impacts compare to other important baseball figures? It’s hard for me to say 50 years removed. From all the accounts that I heard, he was given a lot of grief and handled it well. It’s hard for me to say if there was something special about him that made him succeed where, say, Larry Doby or Willie Mays would’ve failed. 11.) What do you feel were the important events or other important consequences for baseball during the following time periods? The Babe Ruth era – the “popularization” of the long ball The year of Jackie Robinson- opened the doors to expansion – both who plays the game and where it’s played The year of McGuire vs. Sosa- helped regain popularity after the ’94 strike; started the suspicion of players being “enhanced” by drugs The Last 3 years of baseball- a continuation of the “enhancement” debate, with actual facts to back it up 12.) What is BALCO? Bay Area Laboratory Company (or something like that); where Bonds et al. got their illicit goodies 13.) Who is Moses Fleetwood Walker? The actual first black player in baseball, around the 1890s or 1900s. I think Cap Anson refused to play against him, which led to the color line being established in baseball. 14.) Who is the Greatest player you have ever seen play? On TV: Barry Bonds. In real life: Johnny Bench, near the end of his career. 15.) How long have you been following baseball? 22 years, off and on.
1.) In your opinion, how would you rate yourself as a baseball fan on a scale of 1-10, with the following being a general scale 7-someone who knows all of the teams, most of the players on all teams, watches games regularly, and has a decent understanding of the history of the game. 2.) Who was the World Series champion in the following years? 2004-Boston Red Sox 2003-Florida Marlins 1996-NY Yankees 1980-NY Mets?? 1947-NY Yankees 3.) Who is the all time leader in the following statistical categories? Career Homeruns-Hank Aaron Career Steals – Rickey(not Ricky) Henderson Career Strikeouts (pitching) – Nolan Ryan Single Season Homeruns –Barry Bonds Career Hits-Pete Rose 4.) Who is the first Black America to play in the Major Leagues? In the Majors as we know it, Jackie Robinson And which year was this in? 1953 I think. 5.) Which team did the following players play for in the year 2004? Barry Bonds-San Francisco Giants Morgan Ensberg-Houston Astros Joel Pinero-Seattle Mariners Roy Oswalt- Houston Astros Migel Tejada-Baltimore Orioles 6.) Who is currently the highest paid baseball player? Alex Rodriguez 7.) Do you feel there should be a salary cap in baseball? Explain Yes. All teams should be on a level playing field in all sports, otherwise money is what drives the game and not the competition. 8.) Who do you feel is the most influential baseball player of all time? Explain Babe Ruth. He truly changed the game. No one did the things he did in his time. 9.) Who do you feel is the greatest player of all time? Explain It's hard to say since the game and life in general has changed to much since the sport began. I would probably say the greatest all around player of all time is Barry Bonds. Throughout his career he hit for average, power, stolel bases, drove in runs, got on base and played Gold Glove defense. 10.) What do you believe was Jackie Robinson’s role in baseball? How important do you feel his impacts compare to other important baseball figures? Obviously he helped break the color barrier. Someone eventually would have done it, but he opened the door first for so many other great non-white baseball players. 11.) What do you feel were the important events or other important consequences for baseball during the following time periods? The Babe Ruth era – The birth of the slugger. The year of Jackie Robinson- The door opened for so many other talented baseball players. The year of McGuire vs. Sosa- The rebirth of baseball after so many fans, including myself, lost interest in the game. The Last 3 years of baseball- It's becoming painfully clear the sport needs a salary cap and drug testing, otherwise MLB is positioned to lose all integrity and fairness in the sport, thus losing a large portion of their fan base. 12.) What is BALCO? The drug company at the center of the steriod scandal in the sports world. 13.) Who is Moses Fleetwood Walker? An old school negro league baseball player. 14.) Who is the Greatest player you have ever seen play? Barry Bonds. 15.) How long have you been following baseball? Since I can remember....early 80's.[/B][/QUOTE]
1.) Who was the World Series champion in the following years? 2004- Rec Sox 2003- Marlins 1996- Yankees 1980- Mets 1947- Cardinals 3.) Who is the all time leader in the following statistical categories? Barry Bonds- Giants Morgan Ensberg- Astros Joel Pinero- Mariners Roy Oswalt- Astros Migel Tejada- Orioles 6.) Who is currently the highest paid baseball player? Alex Rodrigues 7.) Do you feel there should be a salary cap in baseball? Explain No, there should not be a salary cap in any sport. Owners should have the ability to better their team as best they can. 8.) Who do you feel is the most influential baseball player of all time? Explain Babe Ruth, he revolutionized offense, making the home run a significant factor in baseball. 9.) Who do you feel is the greatest player of all time? Explain Barry Bonds, OPS is off the charts, 73 home runs in one season, will be the all time home run king soon. Changes the game more than any other individual player, ever. 10.) What do you believe was Jackie Robinson’s role in baseball? How important do you feel his impacts compare to other important baseball figures? His role was not being the first black player in the majors, that was inevitable, but to be able to withstand the pressure, get through it, and have a successful career. This let other blacks to realize they can do it too. 11.) What do you feel were the important events or other important consequences for baseball during the following time periods? The Babe Ruth era – Ruth hitting 60 homers in a season The year of Jackie Robinson- Robinson having a successful season The year of McGuire vs. Sosa- Rekindling of interest in baseball after the strike The Last 3 years of baseball- Great playoff baseball, but also a cloud over individual's success (steroids) 12.) What is BALCO? Bay Area L... C... O... A company that made and distributed steroids to major league baseball players. 13.) Who is Moses Fleetwood Walker? no clue. 14.) Who is the Greatest player you have ever seen play? Barry Bonds 15.) How long have you been following baseball? Since I was 4.
bah, I know the Mets beat the Astros in 1986, I thought 1980 they won too...was it the Phillies? That probably would have been my second guess, or the Reds. I know it was an NL team.
1.) In your opinion, how would you rate yourself as a baseball fan on a scale of 1-10, with the following being a general scale actually, I'd say I was more of an 8, and I know like 5-10 minor league ball players, and I don't know a ton of history, but we'll say.... 9- Knows nearly all of the players, storylines, and has a deep database of knowledge of past players and teams. 2.) Who was the World Series champion in the following years? 2004-Bo Sox 2003- Florida Marlins 1996-Braves or Marilns, don't remember which one 1980-LA Dodgers?? 1947- Cardnials?? 3.) Who is the all time leader in the following statistical categories? Career Homeruns-Hank Aarron Career Steals – Ricky Henderson Career Strikeouts (pitching) – The Express Nolan Ryan Single Season Homeruns –Bonds, McGuire, Sosa Career Hits-Pete Rose 4.) Who is the first Black America to play in the Major Leagues? And which year was this in? Jackie Robinson, 1947?? However, I believe there was one signed before Robinson, but Robinson played first if I recall correctly. 5.) Which team did the following players play for in the year 2004? Barry Bonds-OF, SF Giants Morgan Ensberg-3B, Hou Astros Joel Pinero-SP, Sea Mariners Roy Oswalt- SP Hou Astros Migel Tejada-SS, Bal O's 6.) Who is currently the highest paid baseball player? Gay-Rod @ $250 Mill 7.) Do you feel there should be a salary cap in baseball? Explain Absolutley. The Yanks are ruining competitiveness. Lower budget teams can't pay near they money the Yanks do. A pay roll over 200 mill?? that's absurd. and a starting pitching staff making more than 13 other ball clubs in total??? that's wrong on so many levels. NBA and NFL have more competitvieness because of the salary cap. It brings stability and fairness. Baseball needs to follow. 8.) Who do you feel is the most influential baseball player of all time? Explain. I'd say Roberto Clememnte. Died in the offseason of his 3,000th hit. An instant Hall of Famer. Born in the Dominican Republic. Noted world wide as a humanitarian. Loved by all who knew him. The easy answer would be Jackie Robinson. But I feel Clemente made just as much of a contribution to society as Robinson. 9.) Who do you feel is the greatest player of all time? Explain Pete Rose. Despite what he did as a manager, and banned from the HOF, still the greatest ball player ever. That many hits, its just insane. Clemente is a close 2nd in my book. 10.) What do you believe was Jackie Robinson’s role in baseball? How important do you feel his impacts compare to other important baseball figures? Robinson broke the color barier. I feel this is more of a social issue. But he was also a very good ball player. Obviously, his most noted contribution was that of being the first black ball player. 11.) What do you feel were the important events or other important consequences for baseball during the following time periods? The Babe Ruth era – the Babe being trade and changing the fortunes of 2 rival franchises. Babe became considered the best baseball player of all time (and made more money than the President!) The year of Jackie Robinson-duh, broke color barrier. Showed other minorites were as good , if not better than whites. The year of McGuire vs. Sosa- brough baseball back to the forfront. Fans were not as interested, feeling abandoned from the Strike. Fans started coming to the ball park more, to see the slugging superstars. Also made baseball front page news The Last 3 years of baseball-have been interesting. A half ass version of a salary cap became implamented. Steriods run "rampent." But in my opinion, have offered some of the best world series (Angels/Giants, Sox simply getting there). Its been a lot of fun to follw lately, even though my favorite club (the Cubs) and my "home town team"(the Phillies) don't do squat. 12.) What is BALCO?the agency giving illegal steriods to Olympic athletes and baseball players (Bonds, Giambi, Sheffield (even if it was an accident) 13.) Who is Moses Fleetwood Walker?.........could that be the guy who may have been the first black ball player?? 14.) Who is the Greatest player you have ever seen play?in person??.......Rafel Palmerio (yeah, don't go to a lot of games) on T.V.??........I guess Gay-Rod is considered the best player in the bigs right now, so sure, I'll go with him. 15.) How long have you been following baseball? the year of the HR chase between Sosa and McGuire; Since then I've followed the Cubs (who need to unload Sammy) and the Phillies (who need to get active......Ed Wade might be the worst GM in baseball). Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you.
Game 5 of the 1980 NLCS (October 12, 1980) The first four games on the Phillies-Astros best-of five series had been nail-biters with the last three games being decided in extra innings. Game 5 would be no different. The Astros took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and had Nolan Ryan on the mound. The Phillies scored twice in the second, but Houston scored once in the sixth and three times in the seventh to take a 5-2 lead. The Phillies hit Ryan hard in the eighth and rallied for a 7-5 lead. Houston came back with two runs in the eighth, and the Phillies and Astros were back in familiar territory -- extra innings. The Phillies scored a run in the 10th and held on for a thrilling 8-7 win.
1. 7 - Know the teams, starters, etc 2. 2004 - Red Sox 2003 - Florida 1996 - Yankees ? 1980 - Dodgers ? 1947 - Yankees (Before my time just a guess) 3. HR - Aaron Steals - Ricky be Ricky (Henderson) Ks - Ryan HR (season) - Bonds Hits - Pete Rose 4. Jackie Robinson (I agree there was someone befor ehim but don't know who) 5. Barry Bonds- Giants Morgan Ensberg- ? Joel Pinero- Mariners Roy Oswalt- Astros Migel Tejada- Orioles 6. A-Rod 7. No. Salary caps let bad teams make money. Well run teams will find ways to win and make money without a hard cap. 8. Pete Rose. I'm not a fan but he played the game the way it was suppose to be played. He showed you didn't have to be teh biggestor fastest you just had to play hard. Also his off the field problems (gambling) has been an example to many others. 9. Babe Ruth. he hit homers when homers weren't hit. I've seen stats where he hit as many homers in a single season as other full teams. Plus he was an outstanding pitcher as well. Greatest ever. 10. Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier. More than his on the field work was all he had to deal with off the field. Truly a great player and man for dealing with everything. 11. Babe Era - Made NY the best franchise for a very long time. Set in place teh greatest dynasty in baseball. Robinson era - Speaks for itself. McGuire - Sosa - Baseball was dying and these 2 really helped save the game. Last 3 years - Tainted records. 12. Steroid factory (and other HGHs) 13. ? 14. Bonds 15. Since I was 5 so for 28 years. 9.
1.) In your opinion, how would you rate yourself as a baseball fan on a scale of 1-10, with the following being a general scale 8 2.) Who was the World Series champion in the following years? 2004- Boston Redsox 2003- Anaheim Angels 1996- Atlanta Braves 1980- Cant even guess 1947- Brooklyn Dodgers 3.) Who is the all time leader in the following statistical categories? Career Homeruns- Henry Aaron Career Steals – Ricky Henderson Career Strikeouts (pitching) – Nolan Ryan Single Season Homeruns – Barry Bonds Career Hits- Ty Cobb 4.) Who is the first Black America to play in the Major Leagues? And which year was this in? Im sure there was one guy before Jackie Robinson, but I guess I have to go for this, the generic answer. And I think it was the 1940s 5.) Which team did the following players play for in the year 2004? Barry Bonds- Giants Morgan Ensberg-Astros Joel Pinero-Mariners Roy Oswalt- Astros Migel Tejada-Orioles 6.) Who is currently the highest paid baseball player? Alex Rodriguez 7.) Do you feel there should be a salary cap in baseball? Explain No, just some kind of crippling luxury tax - that would be a nice "meet in the middle" 8.) Who do you feel is the most influential baseball player of all time? Explain Influential is hard to answer because how many revolutionary things have really happened in the game in the last 80 years? Really , not many. Maybe thats why baseball is such a beautiful game - its static in a country where nothing is static. Influential can really only come from the greats: Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in a big way; Roger Maris survived the homerun battle with mantle; henry aaron had death threats all the way to the home run record... to put it on one singular player is simply impossible. 9.) Who do you feel is the greatest player of all time? Explain He was Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb and Shoeless Joe Jackson combined.. Joe Dimaggio is the greatest player to ever play the game. His hitting streak coupled with his other achievments make him a simply moving player. He lit up a country and a sport - A nation turns its lonely eyes to you. 10.) What do you believe was Jackie Robinson’s role in baseball? How important do you feel his impacts compare to other important baseball figures? Its hard to comment on this because it has been seemingly been discussed to death. Its hard to put a measure on his role in baseball or his importance... really, he was a tremendous player and person who is stronger than anybody realized was possible. 11.) What do you feel were the important events or other important consequences for baseball during the following time periods? The Babe Ruth era – The ultimate hitting icon - set the pace for all future major leaguers The year of Jackie Robinson- Racial barrier gone, but the problems werent. The year of McGuire vs. Sosa- Brought baseball back from the strike - brought the fun back into a game which was viewed as greedy owners fighting against greedy players The Last 3 years of baseball- The emergence of drug scandals and the Yankees buying craze has not really contributed in a healthy manner to baseball, but the wonderful playoffs and high level of play experienced did help. 12.) What is BALCO? Bay Area LCO..... the company that gave illegal performance enhancing drugs to several major leaguers, olympians and other athletes 13.) Who is Moses Fleetwood Walker? im not sure- but guessing an influential black player that I should know instead of Jackie Robinson 14.) Who is the Greatest player you have ever seen play? With my own two eyes? in person - Albert Pujols on tv - Barry Bonds 15.) How long have you been following baseball? Since 1994 at the age of 8.
1) 8 - I study more about historic players than about teams or current players (by the way Jackie Robinson is the player I respect the most). 2) 2004- Red Sox 2003- Marlins 1996- Braves (?) 1980- Phillies (that a wild guess) 1947- Brooklyn Dogers (?) 3) Career Homeruns- Hank Aaron Career Steals – Rickey Henderson Career Strikeouts (pitching) – Nolan Ryan Single Season Homeruns – Barry Bonds Career Hits- Pete Rose 4) Jackie Robinson - 1947 5) Barry Bonds- Giants Morgan Ensberg- Astros Joel Pinero- Who? Roy Oswalt- Astros Migel Tejada-O's 6) Arod (25 million and change) 7) Yes. To sum it up in one word - Yankees. 8) Jackie Robinson and Babe Ruth. Ruth kept America’s attention after the Black Sox WS. And while there were some greats, IMO, he took Baseball to the next level. Jackie Robinson though did more to bring AAs into the league with the way he played on and off the field. For the first 2 years, he couldn't retaliate, had to put up with hate, threats, discrimination and segregation AND play ball by putting up some great numbers. While he was the perfect candidate for the job, I would have loved to see what Josh Gibson would have done to MLB. 9) MLB - Babe Ruth. The HR numbers are just too much to ignore. Baseball - Josh Gibson. I would have hit even more if he were given the same chance. 10) He was humble enough to not add fuel to the fire. He was strong enough to put up with daily taunts, threats and still show everyone he more than earned his way into the league. Once others saw the value he added to the team, they would be a fool to refuse someone because of the color of their skin. 11) The Babe Ruth era – The good - Babe Ruth kept America's attention on baseball with his hitting. The bad - the Black Sox scandal. I personally think there were more times games were fixed because of gambling than we will ever know. Gamblers were throwing too much money at players that were just getting a taste of money. The year of Jackie Robinson-Allowing African Americans into MLB. The year of McGuire vs. Sosa-Getting America excited again after the strike. The Last 3 years of baseball-Uncovering steroids in baseball. 12) BALCO is the company the Barry, Gary and others used to sell "vitamins and performance enhancers". 13) I have no idea who he is 14) Hitters - Barry Bonds (I know...) Pitchers - Roger Clemens 15) Off and on since the late 60s, early 70s (missed a most of the 80s and early 90s)

Do you feel there should be a salary cap in baseball? Explain Yes, it's the only way to make the league competitive with the teams it has.
