So I bought a new house and the grass is a complete wreck. 3 weeks before we closed we noticed that the grass was turning brown but was being watered by the owners at the time. They later told us they had a web worm infestation and that it was being treated but it was going to be brown for a while.

Then we remodeled the house house for a month and a half so the yard got little attention (little water, little fertilizer). The drought did not help.
Here is my current situation of the front yard. It is half green half brown. Of the 50% that is green 90% of that are weeds! So I have to mow that POS every week or it looks like jungle.

What is my strategy to get the St Augustine grass to come back? I know it will take more than a season and some water.

I already spread Scott’s Bonus S on it and watered that in. I also spread Ortho Max to kill off any remaining web worms.

I have heard using a thatch rake or a regular rake to get rid of the matted down dead grass is a good idea to allow water to get the remaining parts of the St Augustine. But I think I will sections of bare ground in my yard for a while.

I am trying to avoiding re-sodding since there isn’t any quality sod around. Everything I see is dead or almost dead.

Should I just rake up all the thatch and lay Sod down in strategic areas?
Where do you suggest buying Sod in Southwest Houston?

Is it a bad idea to spray round up on the really large weeds. Some of them now have a diameter of 6 inches. Will that prevent anything from growing in that spot at all since I know roundup kills all vegetation?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you have a problem mowing your yard once a week it is unlikely you will ever have a decent looking yard so I would just get used to it.

Also don't use round up, ever, on your yard.

    Stop using Bonus S.

If your weeds are actually terrible get some lawn weed treatment and spot treat.
