We adopted this puppy (Lab Mix) from Shelter 3 month ago, since then he has been through behavior training and generally has very good manner. About a month ago we found out that he eats his poop on the yard while not supervised. I know this is not uncommon among dogs but it is still VERY disgusting. We then take him to vets to do nutrition analysis and cannot find anything wrong with him. We get some medicine call "Deter" from Vet that are supposed to solve the problem but it is not.

Anyone knew how to deal with this bad habbit from dog? HELP!!!

Set an example and stop eating your own poop.

Is this the stuff you put on the food? We had to use that & it worked.

He'll stop. My dog was eating deer crap all the time, but he'll stop eventually. I'd tell him "no" the first ten times and then let it go. He'll come around. My golden retriever did and it only took two months with occasional slip ups!

My dog had a similar problem. She didn't eat her own poop though, she always ate the cats poop. Whenever she heard the cat scratching in the litter box, she would get all excited and run over there and wait for the cat to get out. It was kind of gross, but also kind of funny.

She only did this when she was a puppy though. After she was 1 years old, she stopped. Maybe your dog will grow out of it too. But if you're not willing to wait that long, then I dunno. The vet told me that dogs only do this because they smell something very appealing in the poop. So.. maybe you if you gave your dog a more bland type of dog food, then she would stop..?

Gosh, you dog owners out there, do you always check if your dogs get their mouth washed before they come up to lick your faces?

On the other hand, because dogs' sensory is much higher than that of human's, may be dogs can smell something really pleasant out of poop, which humans are incapable of.

His dog food apparently kicks ass. Try it and report back.

It's kinda gross, especially when you let your dog lick your face afterwards...

Doesn't sound like he's a bad dog, just curious. No telling what he does while you aren't around.

A lot of dogs do this, also alot eat the poop of other animals. The poop contains certain substances that are good for them.

If you want the dog to stop eating his own poop you can feed the dog certain food and he will stop:
pineaple.(i think not sure, check with your vet)
egg wafer(not sure if the translation is correct.)

My dog love horse poop. some grow over it, but some do not

It's a shame you don't live in the city... a dog that scoops his own poop? Invaluable!
