I disconnected my modem and wireless router yesterday to move some things around. After plugging it in a few hours later, only my wireless connection to my laptop that I'm posting this on works, none of the 4 ethernet ports work now. I've tried resetting, powering off and on and everything I can think of.

    Any ideas?

    That's weird.

Did you try a different cable? (maybe the cable is bad)

I've tried 2 cables. The ones I use for my xbox and mac. The ethernet lights on the router don't come on at all. Like I said, the wireless part is working fine so I know I'm getting a signal from comcast.

Does the router supply IP addresses to the machines? (DHCP gateway) If so, did any of that get reset when you moved it?

Dunno. That's really really weird since the wireless is still working...

Check the manual, but most of these things have a configuration web page associated with them. It's usually at the IP 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. Try surfing to https://192.168.1.1 to see if you get a password prompt for the configuration page...

If the addresses posted by rhadamanthus don't work, try 192.168.0.0. The username/pasword may be admin/admin or admin/password.

If it is those passwords, CHANGE them after you are done. :)

OK, sorry to piggy back but...

I am having a weird issue with a windows laptop; it keeps dropping the wireless connection. It says connected, then x'd out, then acquiring, connected, x'd out, acquiring... all in a very quick sequence. This is connected to a wireless UVerse router that works for my other machines. In fact this IBM T42 laptop when it is booted into Ubuntu 8.10 connects and stays connected to the wireless without an issue. It also connects without an issue to the Ethernet port. Ran Virus scans, ad-aware, ccleaner, eventually just reformatted and reinstalled windows. worked for awhile but the problem came back.

    Anybody seen anything like this?

I don't run windows, but my old man has indicated this is some autoconfig service in XP that sucks royally.

First hit on google brings up:

    Try that.

I did a reset on the router by holding in the reset button for approx 30 seconds. Nothing happened at first, but about 30 minutes later everything is working properly.

    Thanks for your help.

After working for awhile I came home to found out the problem is back. Using my laptop via the wireless is fine. My 4 ethernet ports are not functioning again.

You may just have a bad router. Do you have one you can borrow?

See if there is a firmware update for your router that you can install.
If there is no update or if it does not help then get a new router.

    SwoLy?

I mean, uh, ummm... can you get to the management console of the router through a website on the laptop? What version is the router/modem you're using? Also, since you moved stuff around, it could be that there is dust inside the ports. Why not blow into the ports just for giggles (trust me, I fixed USB ports like this before!), and check that if you connect something, the "activity" light turns on?

I'm just confused why everything was working properly until I shut down my modem and router for a few hours while I moved a bunch of stuff around in my office. Then it'll randomly come on for a few minutes and go off again.

I'll try cleaning it as Swoly suggests and re-hook everything.

Again, my wireless is fine that's why I don't think the router is bad.

Although the router may not be bad, just because the wireless is working doesn't mean it is not. My in-laws router was working fine one day and then it was working intermittently the next. Replacing the router resolved their problems. I have seen the type of behavior you describe more than once. Sometimes the wireless works and not the wired and other times I have seen wired work and not the wireless.
