I am a Chinese bb fan, a Rox fan since 1996. I got very confused these days by our fellow rox fan's reaction to Tmac these days. I don't understand where are those hatred coming from and how could people just ignore the facts and keep on hating on the man. From what I saw about Tmac since last year, the facts was he was very honest from start to now, but no matter which way he turns, he was criticized. He said he wasn't ready in last year's training camp, people say he's got no heart; then he tried to play through the pain, people said he's faking and sissy; when he said he was injured, no one trust him. And Rox doctors were all saying he can play, there was no injury found. When the doctor in chicago found him had to do that surgery, everyone start blaming Tmac again while I think Rox doctors should be the ones got blamed. And now that he feel ready to play, again, the fans here are all out blaming him, what is the deal here? Is this American culture? I really don't understand. He might be too naive to always tell people what he thinks, not as political as other superstars, but is being honest that bad in this country?

    I really don't understand.

We are whiny spoiled brats. The internet lets us say things without consequence so some people say whatever they feel without restraint or tact.

Unfortunately it is. Having grown up in another part of the world myself, I completely understand where you're coming from.

    Why?

    He says the stupidest things.

    It's on me.
If I had Paul Pierce and Ray Allen, If I had Duncan or Shaq, I would have won the championship by now. (Paraphrasing)
This team is special. (He said this multiple times with different rosters)
    I'm going to be a fierce T-Mac.

Not to mention, he admitted quitting during games when he was with Orlando. Sounds familiar? Oh yea, the Raptors game last year....

I can't understand it either. Some say they favor the team above all players but how do they support a team nitpicking on certain players? I dun know.
It is unfair here and in life some will be always stigmatized and good guys like 'Shane' will always be in the talks for potential trades.

I mean is there a Chinese proverb for that?
I found one from Shimon Peres, former Prime Minister of Israel.

actually he's always honest when he gets asked something. he always tells his true feelings AT THE MOMENT. he's a moody person so he might see things differently the next day but AT THE TIME of the interviews it's always his honest opinion.

he gets criticized a lot for this and it has brought his image down to being just an all talk kind of guy. but i actually admire him for being this way. i think that's where the cultural difference is.

Lol....What are you trying to say? In everyday life everybody is making comments on anything . The days are long and sometimes we talk and don't know whether we will regret it later or not. Not going through the head. The relevant difference is he's a star in the league so everything he says is and was being magnified.

The internet provides opportunity and anonymity to posters who vent their frustrations without fear of defending themselves face-to-face. A medium for silliness and indiscretion. Internet culture, not American culture.

Tracy McGrady is a heckuva basketball player. It does not appear he is destined to continue his career in a Rockets uniform.

If TMc were to suit up again I imagine it would be a short-term 'showcase' for him to be traded to a team that will want him, either because of his ability or his cap-changing possibilities.

If your best friend is a douche, are you going to call him a douche?

If your boss is a loser, are you going to call him a loser?

And I don't see how any culture can appreciate an all talk type of guy.

Because he is a soft quitter, who had the potential to be much more. It also helps that he is the highest payed player in the league...

So just because you and me aren't famous athletes, it's alright disrespecting our co-workers?

It's okay for him to quit during games?

"It's on me.... " this is stupid to say but its true.
"If I had Paul Pierce and Ray Allen, If I had Duncan or Shaq, I would have won the championship by now. " stupid too... but possibility true!
"This team is special." How many of us in Clutchfans said the same thing too?
"he admitted quitting during games " again, stupid to admit, but honest. too honest. He could have not admitting anything.

Every NBA player says stupid things, that's cause they never went to university. They make lots of $ without acquiring knowledge. You say many things to, I condemn you for whatever you say for the rest of my life. Okay?

Don't stereotype the dislike of TMac as part of the "American culture".

Despite all the playoff losses, fans had been supportive of TMac until last year when the drama happened:
    - TMac said he was 100% but then he played every other game with zero effort.
    - When he realized he might be traded he announced his surgery to the media so that the team couldn't trade him.
    - TMac threw his teammates under the bus and said he had an "average team" last year when we finally got out of the first round and pushed championship Lakers to 7 games.

Btw, I am also a Chinese and I never liked TMac ever since.

Why don't you ask how his cultural background leads him to want to discard McGrady?

Some of it is Internet culture, but some of it is American culture as well. This culture is one of instant gratification -- we want what we want, and we want it now, and we don't care what happened yesterday or a couple of years ago. The Internet has certainly played a role in making that more pronounced, but that has been a feature of American culture long before the Internet became mainstream.

In addition, organizational culture in America is markedly different from other parts of the world. Here we make sharp distinctions between what is "professional" and what is "personal", and we go to extra lengths to separate business relationships from personal relationships. Elsewhere it is not so -- if you want to do business with me, you must become my friend first. Virtues like loyalty even in business organizations are given far more importance in other parts of the world. The result is that while the typical American fan sees these players as paid mercenaries whose job is to entertain them now and be kicked to the curb if they can't perform to expectations, a foreign fan is more likely to see them as part of a family that grows together and succeeds together.

It's probably also a major reason why, for example, basketball in the USA is much more of an individual/superstar dominated sport, while elsewhere teamwork is emphasized much more.

Fine, I'll agree that he says stupid things.
    Not okay. :p

Honestly, aren't ya'll tired of his drama? I'm tired from him saying all these things. I very much dislike the fact that he quits during the game.

If he can come back playing great, fine. But right now, he is just being impatient and again, distraction. All we need to do is wait for the MRI. Just shut your mouth and wait the 4 days.

So, if we had CP3 or Paul Pierce, Rox would have win, he whines, etc. Whatever, but just ask yourself, which words he said or whined was not true? You would prefer a politician over a honest person?
I am not saying Tmac is the truth or he is a perfect person, but to me, he is what he is, a spoiled kid without enough education to deal with the fame and attention. But to see 2 years in a row he went to Africa to assist those poors, this kid is indeed better than many stars in NBA.

Anyway, I don't know and I guess I would never know.

Thanks for the replies, I didn't expect this can be a topic here anyway.
