I need some help testing out a temporary site I put up. I can access it internally from my LAN, but I'm not sure if anyone "out there" can access it. So if some of you "out there" wouldn't mind, could you : 1) Go to http://63.64.251.13 2) Run a search from that page and see if you get any results. Thanks. ------------------ I got nothin'.
Worked fine for me DoD. I ran a quick test and got answers. I will do a few more just to be sure. Ok, I ran it several more times and it's working fine.....nice page DoD....will this be part of a larger site, or is this all there is? ------------------ Save our children from the TAAS test: TAAS test report card TAAS test fact sheet [This message has been edited by Behad (edited October 12, 2000).]
Nice database DoD. I am on a LAN and it was blazing fast. Easy to use and I like how you have many different parameters. One quick question- Are you going to put team names with the players? I agree with everything Mango said. Thanks guys. The URL above is really a "side" project to practice some of this stuff. The "real thing" won't be done until the middle of the season and will be Rockets-specific. This site is just something temporary. The entire site depends on Doug Steele's stats, so if he decides to stop doing it, the page goes down as well. The "real" thing I'm working on will be permanent and done by me, so hopefully I won't stop doing it. ------------------ I got nothin'.
DoD, I thought I was the only one who knew about Doug's page! I've been getting NBA stats from there since 94, and I know he goes back to before that. I doubt you've got much to worry about. BTW, your page looks promising. Good job so far. ------------------
Thanks, Rob. Yes, I'll be putting up all stats I have available or can calculate. I just put the names up there for now to see if I can get the querying and the HTML to pop up. Apparently it's working, so I'll dump the rest of the data on the page sometime later today or tomorrow. ------------------ I got nothin'.
this reminds me...you asked for a review of Ultradev. Are you still interested in that? I might be able to get you an unused license ... I'll find out this weekend. You are mainly interested is quick up-time using "Wizard" type solutions or other pre-packaged thingies, so you don't have to take on 8 learning curves, instead something more manageable like 3...I can certainly sympathize with that.
HeyPartner, I appreciate the offer. I may take you up on it in the near future. One thing I decided to do was actually learn the technology before taking the shortcuts. The only tool I used for the creation of the page as it exists is Frontpage and that was just for the HTML and some validation. All the ASP was "handwritten". I'm getting an understanding of how it works before I put my blinders on and use a tool. Besides, the coding for this was simple in that it took all of about 3 hours and that's with somebody that was as ignorant as me. For anyone with experience, I doubt it would've taken even 1 hour. If I need it, I definitely will bug you and take you up on the offer. Thanks again. ------------------ I got nothin'.
Yeah, I figured you'd be like me and want to know the underlying technology first. If you do decide to employ a package, you might be interested in knowing that all the "Wizard" tools I've tested generate script code, right. That means you can use them as "example-writers" and still do your own coding after seeing what they do. Plus, they usually come with utility libraries of "includes", for like parsing input, stripping characters, etc (very useful in a multi-page site). To work, the includes must all be source code. This isn't like 3rd-party packages for desktop programming where you are using a black box DLL, or something. You don't really have "blinders" on. If you treat them like an example maker that is far superior to a CD that comes with a book, you probably will find them a quite useful supplement to your own coding and a good learning curve flattener.
