Hey fellas. I'm getting a dog, and I wanted to read some recommendations. I'm 17, never had a dog before, and I'm going to college in August. I live in a nice sized apartment. I'm a pretty active dude, play sports, and work out a lot and stuff. Maybe its stupid to get a dog when I'm about to go to college, but **** it. I want one. Any ideas?
Not to be your dad or anything, but from personal experience from friends and such, I would STRONGLY recommend NOT getting a dog in college. If you are super busy its probably not a great idea anyways because dogs need lots of attention.
Nomar: I mean this with all due respect... Don't be selfish. This is a living, breathing creature that will depend on you for its very life. Dogs, in particular, are very needy animals. They need lots of attention. Don't get one just because you want one and then bail on it. This is a significant responsibility that you are very likely not prepared to handle. Just wait.
Dogs are idiots, think about it, Nomar. If I came into your house and started sniffing at your crotch and slobbering all over your face, what would you say?
Everyone except Dean has offered good advice. I love my two dachshunds to death (a three-year-old and a three-month-old), but they are needy little things.
Hmmmm. I guess you guys are right... It would be kind of dumb to get a dog and leave in August. Not cool. Oh well...
Gotta agree with the team, here. My sister had 2 apartment dogs in college. Both were small beagles. The first ate her bathroom door (tore strips right off of it), they gave it up. The second went wacko and ran away. Another person we know of kept their German Shorthair in their house for extended periods of time. It ate 2 chairs and a mattress. Poor animals.
