I am a student at UT and was pulled over today on 29th and guad. I was turning left and there was a light on the pole on the far side (where the traffic lights are for the other side) that was for the turn only. I was looking at the lights above me and assumed it was an unprotected left turn area. Many of the streets before and after are unprotected turns so I never thought about this being any different. Well right when I made the turn, there was a cop that came and pulled me over. I tried to explain to him what I was doing but he wrote me a ticket for running a red light.

I would like to know what my options are because I already had 2 tickets (got pulled over while driving to the rose bowl and the guy gave me a ticket for speeding and running a stop sign...sometimes i wonder if these cops in small texas towns give me problems because..well lets just say racism is still alive and kicking.) but anyways i took defensive driving to dismiss one of those tickets.

I was thinking of getting a traffic lawyer, but I was wondering if any of yall would have any other suggestions to getting this cleared off my record for the cheapest price possible. Oh, also if you can reccomend a traffic lawyer in austin, that would be great too.

It happens more than you know. I am not saying it is for my situation, it may or may not...but it isn't for my ticket in Austin. I doubt it has anything to do with my race.

Look in to deferred adjudication. Basically, they give you a time period that you have to be clean for, and then they wipe it off your record. BUT if you have a violation during that time, it'll come back and bite you in the arse. I'm not sure how cheap it is -- I think you just pay the fine and court fees.

Contact David Sprecker. He might know someone in Austin.

He's a pretty well known traffic lawyer in Houston. It might cost a few hundred, but the case usually gets pushed out until the cop doesn't show and it gets dismissed.

This is nuts. 2 lawyers have been mentioned in this thread (Sprecker and Kubosh) and I have used both at some point. Crazy.

The Sprecker case keeps getting reset. Kubosh basically F'd me. I got a ticket for no front plate. Kubosh says its dismissed and to go home. Two months later I have a warrant for it. I handled everything myself after that. My advice is to go to court, dress nice, and see what you can do for yourself. Ask for trial by jury. If it seems like they are actually going to take it to trial just tell the judge you want time to get a lawyer, they should reset the date and you can find a lawyer if you need it.

You can take Defensive driving again, get defered adjudication, but if you get a ticket in the next 6 months both of them will go on your record.

No, dummy. Ask for a trial by jury and squat. They'll threaten you several times that they're about to bring in a jury. They never will on a trafic ticket.

Should I have a lawyer ready just in case or no?

Also, can I do D.A. if I had a ticket before earlier this year?

    superden...

The situation does sound a little confusing. No idea if a pic of the area and why it is confusing would help your case or not.
