so i got a home theater system for xmas. nothing really fancy. looks easy to setup.

just one set of A/V wires and speakers.

i've connected the wires from the box

    to the TV

just like the picture and manual says to.

then it says to click on "source" from the remote until the display reads AV IN. i've done it exactly like its says but i'm still not getting sound to play on the speakers. i can get the tuner and dvd sounds but i want to listen to my tv shows through the system too. i've tried changing all kinds of settings on the box and the tv.

what the hell am i doing wrong?

Move the stereo (red/white) cables to the top row on your TV.

    That's all I can think of :p

the tv shows you're trying to watch, they're coming directly from your tv and not a cable/satellite box correct?

yes. coaxial cable is connected to the side of the tv. there is no cable box.

does your tv have a spot that says audio out? you gotta connect that to the new receiver, (and tell your tv to turn on the external speakers), otherwise i don't think it will be possible with your tv.

from the looks of the picture, it looks like you have component in, s-vid in, and composite in. i don't see an output, meaning more than likely it's not possible, unless you run the coax cable in to a vcr and use it's tuner for audio out. <-- that probably doesn't make sense.

YOu need an audio out port on your tv. Then under menu / audio, you can set your tv to use the audio out to send sound to the surround sound speakers.

either that or an hd receiver.

is your coax for standard analog cable or does it come from an antenna? the hd receiver boxes have been dropping, you could pick one up for $100, and rabbit ears antenna for $30 (if needed) and atleast you'll have a clearer albeit not true hd picture on your tv, and surround sound.

See the orange ports on each one? You need a coaxial audio cable. You can get that pretty much anywhere (Wal Mart, Best Buy, Radio Shack)

Is the 2nd picture your stereo?

usually TV audio in ports are red & white

the orange port, unless there are other red & white ports designated audio out, are the TV audio out and will need to be connected to the stereo receiver via a coaxial audio cable

2nd picture is the actual dvd theater system.

anyhow, looks like i need an hd receiver. i hooked up the system to the living room through the audio outputs of the hd receiver and it worked fine.

    thanks rodrick.
