Trying to hang a pretty heavy, large picture that has hanging hooks near the edges of the frame (43" apart). Using a stud-finder, it looks like studs near one edge of frame will be either 6" to the inside or outside of the frame hooks.

I can't use an anchor that will leave a big hole once removed (it's an apartment) and don't want a 2x4 on my wall. Any suggestions?

Go to the hardware store and buy you some picture hanging hooks for heavy pictures. Thats what I used to hang a big heavy mirror.

I used some plastic anchors for my apartment. The hole's left where barely even visible.

Tie some picture hanging wire between the two hooks and use a single hanging hook on one stud.

Buy a marble Atlas man and sit the picture on it instead.

    ^^Much funnier.

Got some "Monkey Hooks" from Lowe's...support 35-50lbs (depending on drywall thickness). They work great.

Use toothpaste to fill it in if necessary.

Good to hear that you finally got some well-hung studs.

Don't do this - use the extant D rings.

    Don't use monkey hooks.

Use what smoove shoez suggested - you can even add strength with double or triple duty hangers (each hanger will have two or three nails).

Why not? They're working great and I've put extra pressure on them to test...no shifting whatsoever. Codger in the hardware department seemed like he knew what he was talking about and highly recommended them.

I looked at the hooks you and smooveshoez mentioned, they all said "Extra heavy objects MUST be used with stud" on the back of the package...kinda defeats the purpose. Think I'm good.

I read the thread title completely wrong... "Hanging heavy", "stud" led me to read "pic" as a different word.

Just telling you how the pros do it in the museum and gallery world. The monkey hook looks like a gimmick and has an asterisk next to the weight rating. Also seems like it would make a bigger hole and have the potential to get tangled up with crap inside your wall.

As far as weight, I assumed your picture wasn't heavier than anything a proper heavy duty picture hanger could handle since I have seen them handle a lot.

Glad it is working for you, though.

This...I used smaller ones for a set of three in my living room...it has something to do with weight distribution...don't just use a nail....
