i can finally post threads again!!! Ok here is the deal....i have a PC at home that is serviced with DSL through AT&T. I have a simple DSL modem that was purchased through the company. I just recently got a laptop and its a newer model (HP Pavilion dv6000) i am able to connect to the Wi Fi spots with no problem. My question is what do i need so i can have wireless internet on my Hp while at home? If all i need is a router ( not sure if i even need that ?? ) is it a plug and be done thing or do i need to call AT&T before it works? what all needs to be done?? Your help is needed and appreciated!! (Im so happy i can post threads again!!)
You will need a wireless router at home. The wireless router will be connected to your modem and will generate a wifi signal for your laptop to connect.
You need a wireless router. Follow the instructions that come with the wireless router. If you have problems, call the customer service number that is supplied to you by the manufacturer and they will walk you through the setup. I have a Linksys wireless router I bought from Wal-Mart and it works fine. I also have DSL through AT&T. The whole process takes less than 15 minutes once you purchase the router.
did you have to call at&t for anything? How is linksys? should i stay clear of certain routers? will my internet speed be just as fast? and how much did you pay for yours? sorry so many questions just trying to get all of them out at once. THANKS
Stay clear of the really cheap made wireless routers like Airlink which is sold at Fry's. Buy Linksys or Netgear. I used to buy these cheap wireless routers like around 30-40 bucks, and they would just stop emitting a wireless signal after about 6 months. Then I went and bought a much better Netgear router for 100 bucks at Costco, and it hasn't given me a problem in over 2 years.
ok i think i got it BUT.... i was looking at routers and theres so many to choose from..... i will go with Linksys but whats all this G. N.and B? is the difference important to the fact that it wont work with my laptop? thanks
I went with the "G" model. I think the cost was close to $60. And, no, you do not have to contact AT&T for any reason. And, yes, you will maintain your normal speed even though you are using a router.
quick question... my cousin has this and is not using it, can i just take it from him and hook it up or do i need his cd along with a call to at&t?
you can just take it from him. reset the modem and use the key on the bottom of the modem if you choose to encrypt your wifi.
I have a Linksys WRT150N Router, I think G is the most common and N tends to be more secure, I'm not sure. All I know is that it's a great router.
No you don't, back when I had ATT DSL a few years back I was able to use an Earthlink DSL modem and it worked fine.
ok i got the modem, im going to pick up the power cord and i will push the reset button on the modem and then just replace it with the old modem. My brother tends to think i need the cd. One more... i dont need to hook any cable to my laptop right? just replace the old modem...
If your laptop has built in wireless or a wireless card, than all you need is the password, which will be found on the wireless modem. If you laptop doesn't have wireless, than you need to get one, or you will have to plug in either the ethernet wire or usb wire to get connected.
UPDATE: So i hooked up my cousins 2wire modem from at&t that hes not using in place of my old modem. Because it was registered to him i was not able to get a connection so it prompted me to "reset" the modem the match my at&t info. So i changed the modem to my info and was able to get a connection on my PC. Next i turned on my laptop and found the wireless network and connected to it using the password on the back of the modem. Im good to go! thanks for everyones help it is very much so appreciated !! plus i saved money not having to buy a router!!
