I'm hoping to find a new netbook or cheap laptop for grad school. I really don't need it to do much, just run Open Office and get online. It needs built in Wi-Fi, but I don't think they even make portable computers that don't come with that. I want good battery life(5+ hours). If anyone knows of any good deals available, can recommend a brand or specific computer, or specs I should be concerned about please let me know. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olstemplatemapper.jsp?id=1218161507219&type=product http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dell+-+...lack/9693525.p?id=1218150611743&skuId=9693525 There was another one at Best Buy in store that I was curious about because it had HDMI output, and could hook up to my TV, though I don't know how well that will work.
i'm waiting for either an asus 1215 or 1218. the 1215 should be out in the US by 23rd aug and hopefully the 1218 wouldnt be too far off from there. try looking those up on google.
thx, juicystream (i feel wrong for typing your name), for starting this thread. i was going to start one yesterday about this, but not too much into thread starting. i was also thinking of an asus, but the lenovo s10-3 caught my eye. not planning on waiting for the atom dxxx series. it seems like manufacturers are getting away from the idea behind netbooks. ultraportable and specs enough to do the minor computing. ipad, hp slate (or hurricane rumor), an android tabs just aren't for me. specs are nice and simple two heavy to hold at an angle for a specific amount of time (though that ipad comic app is super badarse. was reading my infinity gauntlet trade paperback last night. thanos versus eternity ftw). seems like it would be a hassle to manuver around and hunch over. since specs are the same for netbooks, just mostly looking for design and other perks (not necessarily spec-wise).
I'll be watching the thread too! Looking for a bigger screen though. But want to stay cheap. Preferably at a big box store -- BestBuy/etc. I'll be speeding through Oregon in August, and want to just zip in off the interstate and buy it then. No sales tax! As an aside -- I was super impressed by the ipad. Too expensive, a little too heavy, and I'm staying PC -- but impressed none the less. Very cool machine. Just not what I'm after.
I'm leaning towards this: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Dell-464-Z530/14648546 The ratings aren't bad, and the HDMI out is a big plus(not to mention that it has XP). I checked out the ones fba34 posted. I like that they have bigger screens and better performance, but that really moves them into notebook territory, which I'm fine with, but I think at that point I would just get a more powerful notebook. Cowboy_Bebop, that netbook does look impressive. 14 hours of battery life.
See if this deal is still up: http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2146972 I'm pretty much in the sane boat as you, not looking for anything too fancy but something small and powerful. I missed a Lenovo 12" i5 for under $800 the other day. If I can't find a great deal online with a decent brand, I'll probably just go to Best Buy and get the Samsung 14" i5 for ~$800. Biggest problem with buying online is the inability to feel the device and see how the touch pad feels.
It is up, and it looks like a great computer. Certainly has performance even beyond my needs. Just wish it had HDMI output, not that I have to have it. I like this one: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Acer-Acer-AO721-3574/14575783?findingMethod=rr Just don't know if its not a better idea to go with a notebook like the one you posted which should have better performance and has a similar battery life for only $30 more, but without the HDMI.
I just bought that one on sunday for the SO. she loves it. then again, she doesn't do much except surf and play yahoo and fb games.
Actually I think the Dell does have an HDMI out. http://www.dell.com/content/product...cd=10550055-1225267-u0t2146972f9fp37238c0s441 The bottom of the page has port info. As far as I know it does 720p. I think I'm going to go ahead and purchase it (for $450 it's a great deal).
Thanks. That looks like the winner. Only other downside is I can't get 0% financing over a period of time. Going by Best Buy to see what they have in store otherwise I'm taking this deal.
I was in there customizing it, and it froze up and no longer comes up. I hope I didn't screw myself. I went back trying to see about getting the upgraded battery. Edit: Its back up again.
My MacBookPro was 1,500, and I wasn't going to buy it. The guy said he would check if they had any open boxes, there was a display model in the music department, he said no one touches it because it's in the music area. So I got a mint MacBook (new model), for 950 down from 1500, you can find a good deal, but you have to search it out. This is absolutely the best computer I've ever used, besides the the desktop Macs at the college. The 10 hour battery life is unbelievable, you should really consider saving up and getting one of the best comps on the market. One thing I also love is that if you ever have a problem, all the customer service reps are in the states, I've dealt with a lot of out-country warranty companies and customer service reps, and it's been a nightmare every time. Buy American when ever you can, it's worth it in the long run.
Still a lot more than the $450 I bought. I would love to have a Mac to try it out though. Its just hard to pay more for something you aren't used to. Then again with the way Microsoft has been changing things on me lately(I'm looking at you Microsoft Office), I am constantly learning something new.
Well, I hope when you buy your next one, you'll be in a position to give the the Mac a little more consideration. Hope you're happy with your new computer though, good luck.
