I am completely new to electric guitar, so pardon me if my questions sound stupid :)

I recently got an electric guitar and was planning to start learning it. I've got a digital tuner and I connected it to the guitar.. My question is after I connected the output of the guitar to the input of the tuner... should I still hear sound from the guitar?

Because I did still hear sounds from the guitar and I am not sure if that is how it supposed to work

    thanks!

You will hear the actual acoustic sound of hitting the string, but when you plug it into a tuner, the electronic signal that would normally be amplified by an amp is sent to the tuner so you can properly tune each string.

Well you will still hear when you strum the strings. No matter what you plug it in to, you will still hear the strings if you strum them.

Thank you so much! this cleared my confusion ... I was thinking like when you plug a headphone into an amp... the speaker should be muted... so maybe it should be the same with the guitar.

is there anything else I should know about an eelctric guitar??

It sounds like you're about as new to it as can be, I'd suggest a little google research.

Are you playing a hollow body or a solid body electric guitar?

LOL. It's not a keyboard. The strings still have to vibrate and create a pitch which can then be detected by the pickups. Vibrations = sound. So yeah, there will always be a sound.

Funny thing is that because I don't own acoustic, I play my electric like an acoustic most of the time. I play for myself and I can't actually remember the last time I actually plugged the thing into an amp.

Chill guys, he's obviously got a lot to learn. No need to poke fun.
Forget about drop tuning. Stick to the standard EADGBE tuning. The thickest string will be the lowest sounding (E). Then it goes to A and so forth.

There are a lot of online tutorials for scales and chords, which is where I would start if you can't afford lessons.

Do you know how to restring the guitar?

I quit my first band out of frustration because the other guitar player couldn't play in anything other than drop d tuning.

If dude didn't know the guitar would make noise while plugged into a tuner, he doesn't need to know alternate tuning yet... although, if he DID, it would be better to know open G or D at first.

Anything else you should know about electric guitar? Hmmm, lots of stuff, but for now I'd say learn to tune it, learn to string it, figure a few chords out, learn a song or two that you like, and start thinking about scales eventually. Get some pedals/effects, and start thinking amp upgrade.

By then, if you haven't already, you'll realize how cool it would be to have an acoustic guitar also.

THEN maybe alternate tuning.... some recording equipment, software/hardware, ya know. Tour bus, groupies, etc.

Drop D tuning is essential if you want to learn to play anything by Kings X or Smashing Pumpkins. Or Creed….

I suggest you listen to as many old ZZ Top albums as you can. Preferably the pre-Eliminator albums.

If you are going to play Creed this is essential.

When you plug your guitar into your amp find the dial that says "Volume", if there are more than one find the one that says "Master Volume". Turn that all the way to the left until the indicator is on "0". To be on the safe side you should also find the volume dial on your guitar and turn that all the way to "0".

This will be critical to the hearing pleasure of your audience and your own personal safety.
