I had just brought a new Toshiba laptop for about a week now, and today the DVD-rom is not being read by the laptop. There's no D: in MY COMPUTER

When I go to Device Manager I see the yellow! next to the Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-850S ATA Device and try UPDATE DRIVER from computer/online but it said "The best driver is already install"? and when i go to property it says "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing (CODE 39)

any advice? I have looked online for help and I was told to do some kind of deleting registry which I had try but nothing happen.

    thanks,

If it were my computer, I would make sure I have all important data backed up and then delete the device from my system via device manager. I would then restart and assume that it will recognize there is a "new" device and things should be back to normal.

If that doesn't work, you may need to reload your system to its factory condition and if that doesn't work, you probably have a bad drive or controller.

Since it's brand new, you should just take it to the service center. Toshiba have some pretty good service center that will take care of most problems for you.

If all else fails, run system restore in programs/accessories/system tools. If it's a software problem, this will likely solve it. If it's a hardware problem, call Toshiba.

Ok I just did System Restore and the computer just crashed once it restarted. I mean it goes to that BLUE screen saying window was shutdown.

Even if I try to get into safe mode/ click repair/ or start window normally it all goes to the same BLUE SCREEN!

can i still return the laptop since is new but window doesnt load up anymore

Do you have a set of system restore disks that generally return your computer to factory condition? If so, try that.

When you did the system restore, how far back did you go? Did you have more than one date to choose from? While booting up you should be able to hit F8, F10 or F12 (or it may be a different function key, but those are the ones I have personally seen work) to go into a boot mode where you can reload "the last good copy of Windows".

But, to answer your question, you should be able to return/exchange it considering you have only had it a week.

I set the Restore back to the last time I used the DVD-ram to install some programs..... and after the Restoring the computer just CRASHED into a blue screen

Even if I try to go to Safe mode/ Boot CD to reintall window/ or anything it all goes to the same BLUE "Window Shut down screen"

I basically can't even reinstall window on it now....

Hope I can still exchange it

What is the error on the blue screen when it crashes? Is it consistently the same thing?

I'm sure there's some kind of warranty. But, they'll probably fix it rather than replace it.

If your getting a blue screen crash after a complete reload, there has to be some kind of hardware that is having a problem with it. Most comonly it is the memory that cuases these errors but as of right now it could be anything. I would definitley take it back and get a new one if you just bought it.

OK! I just took it back to Office Depot an told them about my problems and wanted a new laptop and they told me their EXCHANGE POLICY is 14days?? no matter what! and that I would have to ship it to Toshiba myself!? I realize that it had been 17days since I had the laptop and it wasnt even for me either, it was for my dad and I just took it this week to install some programs on it.

Yeah first the DVD-ram disappear and dont reinstall or update drivers, then after restore and it CRASHES! and wont let you even reinstall window!

Shouldnt they just replace one for you right there??
