Is there any way to create a DVD from a streaming video? I need to capture something so I can play it on a large screen tonight.

I know it's last minute. I thought the file I had was a Quicktime movie and that it would only take a minute. I was wrong.

Thanks for that link but do you know of one that will work on a Mac?

Wait a minute. Is the file on some web site and you're watching it on your Mac as it streams, or is it a file on your Mac that you want to put on a video? You mentioned FILE, that's why.

The file is a Real Player file. It's 4K. I don't know the lingo. I'm an idiot about this stuff, but I'm assuming that if it's that small it's just linking to the website to play. Maybe streaming is the wrong word.

    This is the website:

I'm trying to get this 2004 debate between Bush and Kerry for a rehearsal tonight.

If it is 4k, then more than likely it points to an .rm file. Then I did the source, and it took me here:

    rtsp://a1498.v182885.c18288.g.vr.akamaistream.net/ondemand/7/1498/18288/v0001/video.washingtonpost.com/media/politics/093004-15v.rm
    --stop--
    pnm://a1498.v182885.c18288.g.vr.akamaistream.net/ondemand/7/1498/18288/v0001/video.washingtonpost.com/media/politics/093004-15v.rm

If anyone else can help you with this further than I can, be my guest.

    <OBJECT ID=video1 CLASSID="clsid:CFCDAA03-8BE4-11cf-B84B-0020AFBBCCFA" HEIGHT=288 WIDTH=384><PARAM NAME="controls" VALUE="ImageWindow"><PARAM NAME="console" VALUE="Clip1"><PARAM NAME="autostart" VALUE="false"><PARAM NAME="src" VALUE="rtsp://a1498.v182885.c18288.g.vr.akamaistream.net/ondemand/7/1498/18288/v0001/video.washingtonpost.com/media/politics/093004-15v.rm"<PARAM NAME="controls" VALUE="ControlPanel,ImageWindow"><PARAM NAME="console" VALUE="Clip1">
    <EMBED type="audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin" CONSOLE="Clip1" CONTROLS="ControlPanel,ImageWindow" SRC="rtsp://a1498.v182885.c18288.g.vr.akamaistream.net/ondemand/7/1498/18288/v0001/video.washingtonpost.com/media/politics/093004-15v.rm" type="audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin" HEIGHT=288 WIDTH=384 AUTOSTART=false></OBJECT>

 Why don't you just play it from CF.net ? ;)

Thanks for your help so far, Swoly. I really appreciate it.

I've got it in a format that I can play in a small window on my laptop. I'm looking for a larger image playable on a large screen TV.

We need to study the gestures and facial expressions so we're really hoping to get a larger image.

Is there software that takes an .rm file and converts it somehow to Quicktime or whatever else I'd need so I could burn to DVD?

The quality is very low; I doubt you'll get it to show properly on a DVD. Why not see if they have it on YouTube and try to get the .FLV and then make it into a...

... hold up, I'm getting ahead of myself here. Sorry.

What I meant to say, was: the dimensions of the original video you see on the screen and the frame rates are poor that you may not have a good image on a larger screen, whether on a PC or a Mac. I don't know how to get the dimensions larger without hurting pixels.

First you have to get it downloaded from the stream. I don't know about any program--besides the one I linked above--that could do that and then get it to video. To convert any type of video (RM in this case), use "Super©".

I am waiting for other web geeks to chime in with suggestions. Time is running out for you, I know... that's as much as I can tell you, though.

Thanks, Swoly. I think I found it here:

    http://www.archive.org/details/presidential_debate_9-30-04

I'm in the middle of a 2 hour download of the one under Individual Files called MPEG2.

Does that seem like the right one to download? I'd hate to wait 2 hours and find out I picked the wrong file for converting to DVD on my Macbook.

Yeah, I think so. As long as the dimensions are in the 400's or 600's of width times height, you should be ok. The very first one was in the 100's, and that wouldn't look ok on large screens. Good luck!

Look for a program called "AVI Preview"... it builds an AVI and an MPEG while you're downloading, and previews the screen sizes, so you can see how it looks. I think it's only for PC, though.

If you're on a MAC check out a program called Snapz Pro X (there are also similar ones). They let you capture any portion of your screen and save it into various formats.
