Ok so I have been at my current job for about 19months now and while the company dosn’t tell me I should dress better, I feel that I should. I get tired of wearing worn-down jeans with a collared shirt... ...So the point of this thread is for recommendations on where to shop for better office attire (khakis, shirts, shoes, etc). Of course THE CHEAPER THE BETTER. Please don't say Ross. Atleast the one closest to me, hardly ever has anything worthy. Please help me dress to impress.
I tell everyone trying to find clothes that are nice and at cheap prices should check out Marshall's. But not all Marshall's are alike. Go to the huge on on W. Grey or the one by the Galleria. They carry nicer things there. There is a nice on on I-10 near Gessner as well. You can always just shop the sale section at banana republic.
nice slacks and a button up shirt. Simple and clean. Nice belt and shoes (black and brown of each) since it's winter, you can get a gray, black and blue pair of slacks (shoot for 5 total). If you arent messy you can where them twice after you get them dry cleaned, so long as you rehang them after you get off work, not just toss them aside. Shirts, like i said, button up. have a few basic colors (white, blue, yellow, or whatever you'd like really). Depending on your taste, have a couple nice button up shirts with patterns. worn down jeans? if they don't care, i guess its ok, but at least get a fresh pair. If dress code isnt a big deal, you could still be more casual on friday but casual doesnt mean old worn out stuff...jeans, nice shoes still and a polo colored shirt. thats a start
Target. Also check out thrift stores for shirts, you might have to do a little digging but you can find some good, unique stuff. Two of my gf's favorite shirts that I wear were actually thrift store finds.
Van Heusen is a good place to start. Pretty inexpensive and not bad of quality ..wrinkle free too, which can help keep laundry expenses down. To keep costs down and start your work atire collection, its a good place to start. You can get $25 dress button up shirts, which isnt bad at all and if you hit up a sale you could really make out well. p.s. button down collars are considered more casual than a straight fold down. But if you have been wearing worn jeans, button down collars would be just fine
well it was a bit of a over exageration but lets say they are not fresh since i wear them the most. dress code at my work: no shorts and tuck in your shirt. thats it. thanks for the help so far guys.
Actually Marshall's (the one by the Galleria and the one on west gray) have really good deals on dress pants and dressier khaki's. They also have some decent shirts (sometimes) If you want a good deal on pants/shirts/suits/ check the JOS A BANK website for their clearance sales. They seem to have them every week or two.
True dat. One week, I wore a nice button-down from Target for ~$20 and another from Brooks Brothers for ~$50. Guess which one I got more compliments on. Honestly, almost any store that sells mens clothing has at least a few good-looking (and probably relatively cheap) items. The important thing is to know what you're looking for, what looks good on you, and what size fits you best (not necessarily what size you're used to buying).
It depends on what you do and the industry of your company. Unless you're in corpoate or deal with clients, I don't think it really matters. I know a lot of engineers, IT folks who dress casually to work. I purchase Kenneth Cole slacks from Macy's and my shirts from the vintage clothing stores on Westheimer (e.g. Buffalo Exchange, Taxi Taxi).
Target and Marshall's are good as is T.J. Maxx. One thing I have learned from my wife is to buy stuff that is not in season at that time - usually you can find them on sale (like sweaters in the summer for example).
I don't normally shop at JC Penny, but my wife was looking for something and dragged me to the new one out in Cypress. She then decided I needed to update my work wardrobe. I was pretty supprised at the sales and decent quality of clothes. Along with Penny's, like others said I'd check out Kohls.
For shirts, I second this. For khakhis and nice dress pants, try Foley's and Sears' Dockers. You'll always find them "on sale" at Foley's. There's more variety at Foley's, though. Hope that helps.
