I am thinking of getting a new dlp lcd projection tv, the samsung HL-S6187W within the next month.(before the start of the rockets season!) I was wondering if anyone here has purchased a dlp lcd projection tv and how their experience was with it. I read somewhere that it may need to have the bulb replaced periodically every few years and the bulb is 200 bucks or so? Anyone here know more details about that?

    Thanks

It is either a DLP or an LCD, it can't be both. They are completely different technologies.

I ended up going with LCD because the lack of glare and wider veiwing angle. Plus I like the flexibility of being able to mount it on the wall.

why do i see a lot of places advertising then a dlp lcd projection tv? is that just a naming trick they play to make you think its a lcd-thin type tv? i know they are deeper than lcds but i heard for their size they are pretty light

DLP is projection. LCD can be flat panel or projection.

I have no idea where they would advertise a DLP LCD because it doesn't exist.

Also LCD is the best for using as a computer monitor.

In my opinion, DLP comes in last as far as quality is concerned. That's why they are the cheapest.

from your response you said lcd can be projection as well. dlp is a technology that can be used in projection so logically can there be a lcd projection tv that uses dlp technology?

yeah if i was going to use this as a computer monitor i would get a lcd, but the projections are a whole lot easier on the wallet and i wouldnt be hanging up the tv anyway. i probably get a smaller sized (23-27inch) lcdtv monitor for my pc later on

Just because it is projecton does not mean that it is the same technology. DLP uses 1000's of tiny mirrors where LCD uses three glass panels (red, blue, and green) that turn on and off different pixels. Trust me on this one, there is a difference.

DLP's aren't easier on the wallet. They're often more expensive than LCD's (depending on size). Also you don't have to hang a LCD on a wall. Its an option. Sounds like you've already made a decision. Go with the DLP.

I have a toshiba 62inch DLP TV, and let me tell you.....I love it! It really depends on your eyes, but I can see pixels big time on LCD TV's, and plasmas just look crappy to me. I bought mine from best buy and purchasd the warranty. The bulb replacements are included with that. The pic quality on my DLP is amazing. The colors are so vibrant, and everything looks so real. I am a huge fan of the DLP technology.

Plus, I like the feel of having a projection TV. It feels weird to me watching a flat screen. I dont know why, maybe I am weird, but my TV is only 9 inches deep. If I were to get a flat screen, I wouldnt hang it on the wall anyways, so the extra 4 inches of space that I would save would be non existent.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_display_technology

DLP and LCD are competing technologies as said before, uses different methods to create an image. It's like saying is there such thing as a quasi Ford/GM SUV.

DLP is still expensive and they give truer blacks then Plasma or LCD, so I don't know if it's the inferior technology.

When you have contrast ratios of 6000:1, I don't think you have to worry about blacks not being black.

DLP is regularly less expensive than LCD or plasma.

i know dlp are expensive but i havent really seen a lcd in my price range (<3k) and size range (at least 50' pref 56+) that is 1080p. I saw a 46' lcd 1080p for like 3800 by samsung which was way too much for me. I have read a bit more on both technologies right now and there are of course good and bads with both. Anyone know of any good deals? I am partial towards Samsung since I have had great experiences with them, but I am not opposed to seeing other brands if it means saving money without compromising quality or a significant quality difference that is more expensive

BenignDMD--- Did/do you notice this "rainbow effect" that is apparently a con with your DLP? Also if you dont mind me asking the price you paid for the tv and warranty?

I dont want a plasma at all I havent really seen a plasma i really like in terms of quality its going to be either a lcd or dlp for me.

Master Baiter & v3.0---thanks for your info in distinguishing the differences between the two technologies

Why don't you check out the Sony's if your worried about the "rainbow effect"?

I myself will go with probably the KDS-50A2000 - I've only head good things about the SXRD stuff. I think the XBR2 just came out in bigger sizes...but much more expensive.

Another question is: can you trust on-line retailers. The Sony I mentioned, for example, can be found here for only $1899 plus $150 or so shipping, which is a great deal...but website doesn't look the best.

I haven't seen any rainbow effect. That maybe on a differen model. I got mine last Christmas in time for the Rose Bowl. I was around 2900 at the time, but Best Buy price matched it for me at 2400 (found it online for that). The warranty was 300 I think. I opened up a BB reqards card at the same time, and got back 5 bucks fr every 100 that I spent on the TV. That came out to another 100ish in free BB stuff.
