I have to fill out this housing form and needed some advice. What dorms are good and which ones suck, what meal plan should I get, any other advice... I hear san jacinto is the best one, what about Whitis??
san jac is a very nice dorm, so is brackenridge, and moorehill(where im staying) is pretty cool(plus all 3 are right by the stadium so its close for football games), jester isnt as bad as people say but its massive by far, like 2000 people stay there as for meal plans i have the silver dining dollar thing, where i have 750 dollars on my card for the year, but if you go to http://www.utexas.edu and click on students, food service you can get more info, you can even search for dining dollars to see where their accepted, etc-all the residence halls do, plus the union(has chick fla, wendys, taco bell, tortilla flats, pizza hut, etc), plus many outside places like mr. gattis does, im not sure how it works yet but once i find out i will use it to the max, i think they have a number to call for help on that at the dining dollars homepage hope this helps
Here's a picture of Jester. The tall building is Jester West. That's where I lived for two years. To the left is Jester East. Jester is the largest dormitory on campus in terms of size and people. The smaller building in the front houses the two dining cafeterias. All you can eat on the 2nd floor and a la carte on the 1st floor. Jester and San Jacinto both have cafeterias and a convenient store. San Jacinto is the newest dorm, and I think every room has a private bath. Most dorms either have connecting (2 rooms share) or community. If you want to live in a smaller dorm, then I'd go with Moore-Hill, Brackenridge, or anyone of those dorms on 21st Street. There are smaller dorms on Whitis, but the Gym and Library are located on 21st St. The Whitis dorms would put you closer to the Union and another Library but if you like to ball, its a long walk back to your dorm late at night when its freezing.
That is one of the great joys of UT. Ranks right up there with 8 am classes on MWF. Oh and I lived in Jester East last year and really liked it. It probably helped that I had a connecting and not community bath, but the location is very central to everything and the gym is right across the street so that's good. Also, cafeteria food doesn't suck as much as people like to think (especially when they actually started heating the burgers second semester).
Thanks for the help. I want a private or connecting bath if possible, so which dorms other than San Jac have them. Which ones are close to the gym, cause I definitely want to be near. I heard Jester was really ****ty also. What should I put as my top 3 choices, and what's up with the meal plan... I looked on the site and I still don't know which one to get
I lived at Dobie for three years. It was OK, I guess. Location was terrific. Beer policy was excellent-- as long as it was in a paper bag, they'd look the other way (this was 92-95 so it may be different now). Food was OK. I always heard Castilian had the best food. Whoops, re-reading your post-- bathrooms depend on the type of room. First year I lived in a single with a roommate, until I drove him insane and he moved out. The room had a single bathroom.... not too bad, really. Last two years, I lived in a corner suite; three roommates, one of which you shared a bedroom/bathroom with. Nice. I can't imagine having to walk down the hall to take a ****. I never really considered living in university housing and to be honest, I can't remember why. I much preferred living in off-campus apartments, but then again, I was 21 by that time and drunk all the time so I'm not sure how objective that preference was.
Did you enjoy moving in and out? I think you should mention to tozai that Dobie is 27 (?) floors with only 3 elevators and only 1 elevator to the street level. tozai, don't worry about your meal plan. You will spend every cent. It works like a check card. You don't have to use it in the cafeteria only. About the baths, its not that bad. I had connecting, but I was surprised at how clean the community baths are.
like someone else said, the meal plan is really money you can spend almost anywhere and you only spend for what you want to eat. First year I lived in a single with a roommate, until I drove him insane and he moved out You too Brian. I just drove mine insane about 10 days ago and now am by myself and life is so much sweeter. No more, the tv's too loud i'm trying to study (who the hell studies), or turn the music off I wanna sleep. I didn't think it would be this good.
smokey, i have a question how do you use the dining dollars online, do you just call the place or if you can order online order and tell them your using your card when they deliver it?
