I have an upcoming debate about this topic and I have to be against it being adapted in a third world country. I post this here because I have no idea what a land reform is, so please educate me and if you could - give me some good points why I should be against it.
Yes, I have read that and barely understood it. Can you give me a specific example or give your opinion of it?
I take that back... the wikipedia link I visited earlier didn't have all that other stuff (Arguments for and against land reform). Thanks.
Are you sure the debate isn't over the new Absolut ad campaign? Maybe you should study up just in case.
Zimbabwe has been doing it the last decade or so. I think it is a terrible idea. It violates property rights and it gives way too much power to the government. EDIT: Good I see the link is helping you.
While I almost always believe that non-market based government intervention makes things worse rather than better, the case of land reform in South Korea in the postwar (Korean war) era is an example of success using forced allocation. Land reform has been used to various degrees all over Latin America, and one might even argue in 19th century American land policy. That said, the track record is mixed, and by mixed I mean pretty bad. If you're debating the negative, look to Latin America, and be cognizant of the S. Korean counterpoint.
This is for Economics class by the way, so, so far: Violates property rights too much power to the government Hmm, let me check out Latin America.
