This award better go to Maurice Clarett. Though I know for whatever f-ing reason, the fact that he's a freshman will hurt his cause. Is this award a career achievement award? No. It's an award that covers 1 regular season. In this 1 regular season, no one comes close to Clarett. Leftwich? Puhlease. Those who say Clarett has racked up his yards against weak defenses, could say the same for Leftwich. Last I checked, the Big 10 was better than the MAC. The one time Leftwich played a great defense, VT, they got blown out, and Leftwich padded his stats in an irrelevent 2nd half. Why was it irrelevent? Because Marshall's offense didn't do jackcrap until it was too late. Wallace? OU game is all that needs to be said. Clarett has yet to have an "OU game". If anything, the fact that Clarett is a true freshman should ENHANCE his status. How many true freshmen dominate a game like he has? Maybe a handful over the last 50 years, if that many. Clarett's got the numbers, the team record (undefeated thus far), and the hype. All he is "missing" is the fact that he's not an upperclassman. What is Clarett supposed to do about that? Skip a couple grades? I found this award to be a joke last year, when Crouch won over Harrington and Grossman. It will be a bigger joke than "Why did the chicken cross the road?" if anyone but Clarett wins it.
I think Chris Brown needs to be included in there as the current rushing leader, with a good shot at 1500-1800 yards. Suggs should be also, in my opinion. Kingsbury & Phillip Rivers also have to be in the mix as arguably the best QBs in the country right now in terms of performance. Clarett will show a lot these next three weeks. Up until now, he hasn't played against a single good defense. The only two good teams they've played are Washington State and Texas Tech, both of which are known for their offenses and not defense. Now he gets his chance against good opposition. Personally, I think he'll struggle pretty bad, but that's just me.
Ooops. I did forget Chris Brown, who has been a machine this year. Brown is my 2nd choice, behind Clarett thus far.
Actually, WSU has a very good front 7... While Clarett hasn't faced a stellar defense thus far, most of the yards he has racked up thus far, have been well earned. I'd venture to say at least 50% of his yards come after contact. He isn't a Terrell Davis, who goes untouched for the first 10 yards, and then has wide open field to run through. He seems to get hit around the line of scrimmage, and then bust it for an extra 5-10 yards. Suggs is very good, but he didn't do much against the one good/great defense he faced, in Texas A&M. My 3rd choice for Heisman would be Onterrio Smith. He's the most versatile runner in the nation, in the sense that he's one of those rare backs who can go North and South as well as East and West. He reminds me of a smaller Ahman Green. Smith is great at making something out of nothing, with his unbelievable quickness.
I think Clarett is the best right now. He has played good in every game. Wisconsin does have decent run D and he stepped up big late in that game to help OSU win. Him being a freshman will kill him though. I wouldnt be surprised to see Brown or Lee Suggs win it just because they wont want it to go to a freshman.
i think its still going to be Ken Dorsey when its all said and done. Clarett's freshman status will hurt him, and the fact that Dorsey is the quarterback on the nation's best team will win him the award outright. That seems to be the criteria that Heisman voters have followed for years.
If you have such a need to insult, how about saving a few for "Heisman" Benson? He's been about ten times the disappointment Chris was...
Maurice Clarett and Kliff Kingsbury are quality players, but neither is deserving of Heisman Consideration. I think it will come down to Chris Brown, Onterrio Smith and Ken Dorsey. Dorsey has an advantage in that he'll probably be playing for the National Title, or in a major BCS bowl. Brown has an advantage in that he plays Oklahoma, and a huge game against such a reknowned defense would be massive for him. Smith plays in the Pac-10, where they don't play defense.
Oh, I got it. If you're the top player in your class you should be criticized if aren't playing to the peak of perfection, but if you're only in the top five to ten, you're immune from criticism. Thanks.
If Miami goes undefeated going into the Fiesta Bowl, the race is over. Dorsey wins. I don't care how bad he might of played that is how it will go down (assuming he is the starter and hasn't broken a leg or something). Not saying he is the best player, that is probably Leftwhich, but the Hiesman will go to Dorsey in that case. He will get it based on career achievements if nothing else. If Miami loses to VTech or Tennessee--it is anybodies guess. Clarett has a better shot than most freshman because their isn't a lot of singularly distinguished players on dominant teams and plays for a Big media conference. I kind of doubt he will win though. If I were voting my mind would be wide open right now, I would have a very hard time telling you who I would vote for. Probably not Dorsey, I don't think he is the best player on his team by a long shot--but he hasn't made any key mistakes to blow games.
Greg Jones is going to win the Heisman. It started two weeks ago with Miami and will become even more evident after he destroys Notre Dame on Saturday.
Chris Brown should win it. I doubt if he will, though. It just seems like for whatever reason, people dismissed CU as done for the season after losing 40-3 to USC. Colorado's just that kind of team. Their offense is all about momentum and consistency, and for whatever reason, their offensive line seems to struggle early on in the season. However, since then, they've picked it up, and gotten some consistency at the QB position. In a year where there is no true Heisman leader, he's been probably the most dominant player I've seen on a good team, and Colorado is a good team, whether or not they beat OU. I think they'll win the North, and I think they very well could win the Big XII championship again, considering the game is at a neutral site. If I had to guess, though, I'd say Dorsey. I don't think he deserves it-- I can name about 50 QB's who could succeed given that much time to pass (has he ever been touched?!?!) and athletic receivers who make plays downfield -- but I'm sure it'll come down to that mythical "senior leadership" crap that seems to be so prevalent on most of your sportstalk shows.
Onterrio Smith has the game to win a Heismann... but he'll suffer just like Harrington and Smith did from playing in the northwest... very little exposure to the eastern media types that vote on this award. Its Dorsey's. I think deep down we all know it, as much as we may dislike the idea. While its not supposed to be, the Heisman seems to be a career achievement award...
