PASADENA, Calif. - Standing atop a platform at midfield, listening to the burnt-orange-coloured crowd chant "one more year," Vince Young picked up the Waterford Crystal football that goes to the U.S. collegiate champion, tucked it under his right arm and struck a Heisman Trophy pose. Recount, anyone? Young found the best way to get over his disappointment in finishing second to USC's Reggie Bush in the Heisman voting last month. He instead took a firm hold on another trophy, running eight yards for the winning touchdown -- with 19 seconds left -- to cap Texas' 41-38 victory over USC at the Rose Bowl. REMINDS ME OF: (May 22- June 1, 1995) David Robinson was in the wrong place at the wrong time. For six games during the 1995 Western Conference Finals, the reigning NBA MVP was standing between Hakeem Olajuwon and the basket. Olajuwon used a variety of fakes, hooks and Dream Shakes to drive past, escape from, and score over Robinson and the Spurs' double-and-triple teams. In the series, Olajuwon outscored Robinson 212-146, pouring in 40 or more points in three of the games. Olajuwon cemented himself as one of the greatest basketball players of all time by turning in one of the most dominant individual performances in NBA history. "He (Robinson) worked so hard to keep up with all my fakes, but he couldn't," Olajuwon said. "I was at my best."
If dream had lobbied to the media to try and win votes for the MVP then it would have reminded me of it....but he didn't.
