Smart. No idea what happened to him in Chicago - but he was very good here last year. If this staff can find that Neris again - and we have to trust their track record - this is a terrific late-season addition.
Neris got off to an abysmal start, his command was all over the place. He's been really good the last 2 months. 2.60 ERA, and 1.66 FIP his last 18 games, we also know he can handle pressure innings, unlike a lot of our unproven (but impressive) other arms.
Smart move even if it's just for his leadership and FIRE. But this group can use another veteran who has performed through the wars. I didn't want him at first, but I can't deny there are some great benefit that this team/bullpen need.
Honestly with how crappy most team's pen are, I'm surprise no one tried to get to Neris first. Ofc maybe he just wants to return to the Astros
Whitley's numbers since 7/1: 15.2 IP; 1.15 ERA; 32.8/4.7 K%/BB%; 2.79 FIP. Why is he still in the minors? Why go outside the org? It's also not like Neris has been hot recently - he has a .358 xwOBA for August.
