The amazing athletes of the National Football League -- bigger and stronger than ever before -- are dying young at a rate experts find alarming, and many of the players are succumbing to ailments typically related to weight.

The heaviest athletes are more than twice as likely to die before their 50th birthday than their teammates, according to a Scripps Howard News Service study of 3,850 professional-football players who have died in the last century.

what's even more interesting is the deaths of a few steelers lineman from the seventies. if anyone remembers, haslett (sp) former coach of the Saints was talking about how they were one of the first nfl teams that had a lot of steroid users during their dynasty years.

Just goes to show that no matter how much a person is in "good shape", it's very hard to be 300+ pounds and healthy at the same time.

That said, the real problem is many very heavy NFL players continue to eat like horses after they retire, which means their muscle mass decreases while their body fat increases. Most former 300+ lbs NFL players in their 40s and 50s turn into a tub of lard.
