Alright so basically for the past year or so, or at least as far back as I took notice my right shoulder has been making odd popping noises.

Here is a bit of quick information. I usually work out about 5 days a week for 2 hours per day, mostly involving swim workouts. I've never had any serious health problems before and i've luckily never broken a bone before.

Recently i've noticed that my right shoulder makes rather loud popping noises when I rotate it in either direction, and after about an hour of doing swim workouts it begins to have just minor pain and nothing worse.

The popping noise is always there, but the minor pain only occurs when I use my shoulder for a lengthy time

I'm only 18 so this is somewhat of a concern at such a young age.

Any ideas on what might be the problem or suggestions ?

I swam throughout high school, but I only have limited knowledge due to the fact that I'm not an expert when it comes to the human body.. lol.

I'm not sure how loud you speak of.. But I have heard that a small popping sound is from the ligaments crossing over the joint itself...

Bad/Basic example: A guitar pick plucking the guitar strings.
When I rotate my shoulders, I feel a popping sensation, but obviously, that's not a problem. Like I said, it's just the ligaments.

But if you're clearly hearing it, then you should definitely talk to your coach (if your on a team).

    Also:

Make sure you're warming up your shoulders enough prior to workouts.

Don't just do static stretches (long stretches where you aren't moving)...

Do some ballistic stretches (moving stretches)
    • Swinging your arms in a backstroke motion, then forward
    • Huggers, where you swing your arms to a 'hug yourself' position back and forth
    • speedskater, etc etc
    Google em, they help.

As always, when you have a health concern, it's usually a good idea to get a doctor's opinion.

chrunchy shoulder could be a lot of things. ligament damage. loose particles. etc. go to a clinic and get it checked out, likely won't require surgery, just some therapy for a few weeks.

Since there's a shoulder thread here... I wanted to ask... is it normal to get a muscle pull on your shoulder if you sleep on your side for more than an hour?

Got this huge cramp, it's almost like someone beat my shoulder with a hammer a couple of times... but I sleep on my side all the time.

You have Carl Herrera Disease. For a human being who plays professional basketball, it is fatal. You're toast. Just ask Carl Herrera. :(

Maybe you are overdoing it. 5 days a week is pretty rigorous. I know that when I was playing basketball, running and exercising everyday did some damage to my knees and ankles... I say ease up a bit on the intensity and see if that helps... or adjust your schedule to allow more days of rest.

I think it is just your workout + age.

I used to have popping knees from running too much @ 18, but now I run a bit less and the knee popping stopped. If it doesn't hurt it is likely growing/tired nothing more.

I'd get doctor's opinion, I did on my knees and he told me exactly what I told you, but it MAY be different for your shoulder.

Didn't read the post but know the answer. Cut it off. Whatever problems you have will go away. Problem solved. Now I'm off to help another poor schmo.
