Anything that y'all would reccommend not missing? I have never envisioned it as much of a touristy area, but have never been, and would like to go. I guess we will check out Hollywood, a few museums, but other than that I can't think of anything we could do. Any ideas?
Artist: Ice Cube Album: Boyz N the Hood soundtrack Song: How to Survive in South Central Typed by: dj.flash@pobox.com "And now, the wonderous world of.." "Hey, come to Los Angeles! You and your family can have peace and tranquility. Enjoy the refinement.." "Hey Bone, hey ***** where you at though?" "Hello, my name is Elaine -- and I'll be your tour guide through South Central Los Angeles" [Ice Cube] How to survive in South Central (what you do?) A place where bustin a cap is fundamental No, you can't find the **** in a handbook Take a close look, at a rap crook Rule number one: get yourself a gun A nine in your ass'll be fine Keep it in your glove comparment cause jackers (yo) they love to start **** Now if you're white you can trust the police but if you're black they ain't nothin but beasts Watch out for the kill Don't make a false move and keep your hands on the steering wheel and don't get smart Answer all questions, and that's your first lesson on stayin alive In South Central, yeah, that's how you survive "Hi this is Elaine again. Are you enjoying your stay in South Central Los Angeles, or is somebody taking your things? Have you witneesed a driveby? Okay, make sure you have your camcorder ready to witness the extracurricular activities on blacks by the police, so you and your family can enjoy this tape, over and over again." "This is Los Angeles." "This is Los Angeles." [Ice Cube] Rule number two: don't trust nobody especially a b****, with a hooker's body cause it ain't nuttin but a trap And females'll get jacked and kidnapped You'll wind up dead Just to be safe don't wear no blue or red cause most *****z get got in either L.A., Compton or Watts Pissed-off black human beings So I think you better skip the sight-seeing And if you're nuttin but a mark make sure that you're in before dark But if you need some affection mate Make sure the b**** ain't a section eight cause if so that's a monkey-wrench hoe and you won't survive in South Central "Now you realize it's not all that it's cracked up to be. You realize that it's ****ed up! It ain't nothin like the **** you saw on TV. Palm trees and blonde b****es? I'd advise to you to pack your **** and get the **** on; punk mother****er!" And you need your ass straight smoked Yo I wanna say whassup to DJ Chilly Chill Sir Jinx, aiyyo Cube these mother****ers don't know what time it is So show these mother****ers what's happenin Tell these mother****ers, don't **** around in South Central God damnit! [Ice Cube] Rule number three: don't get caught up Cause *****z are doing anything that's thought up And they got a vice on everything from dope, to stolen merchandise We discern cause South Central L.A., is one big yearn Waitin for a brother like you to catch a disease and start slangin ki's to an undercover or the wrong brother And they'll smother, a out of town mother****er So don't take your life for granted cause it's the craziest place on the planet In L.A. heroes don't fly through the sky of stars they live behind bars So everybody's doin a little dirt And it's the youngsters puttin in the most work So be alert and stay calm as you enter, the concrete Vietnam You say, the strong survive ****, the strong even die, in South Central Yeah you b****es, you think I forgot about your ass, you tramp-ass hoes? You better watch out. And for you so called baller-ass *****z, you know what time it is. South Central ain't no joke. Got to keep your gat at all times mother****ers. Better keep one in the chamber and nine in the clip god damnit. You'll sho' get got, just like that. This ain't no joke mother****ers. Now I wanna send a shout-out to E-Dog, the engineer, puttin his two cents in.. "This is Los Angeles."
I recomend you take a drive down Sunset Blvd. It runs parallel to Hollywood Blvd so it won't be hard to find. There you will find the best sushi bar in the states called Miagi's. It is directly across the street from Dublin's, and if you like sushi, It's the place to go. If you are 21 and are half-@ss looking, and you would like to look at hot chicks go to BarFly. It is also on Sunset, and some of the hotest girls from L.A. reside there.(dress well)... other places of note would be House of Blues, The Rainbow, and the Red Rock. I also recomend taking a day time drive heading due west on Santa Monica untill you hit the coast. On the way you will run into 3rd street Promenade, which is a great place for shopping, and people watching. Don't be startled if you see someone famous because they often frequent this spot. If you spend time there and you start to get hungry, I HIGHLY recomend getting on the Pacific Coast Highway(PCH) exiting from Santa Monica go north about 15 miles , and eat at Dukes at Malibu. The scenery on the drive is awesome, and the food is to die for. Try to arrive before the sun sets, and you will see something truly beautiful. "California Dreaming"
Yeah, PCH from 3rd Street Promenade to Malibu is a great drive; particularly around sunset. You might also consider Gladstones on PCH in Pacific Palisades (just before you hit Malibu). The Getty Museum is OK (if you are gonna drive Sunset from the 405 freeway, you can't miss it on the hill to the West). Universal City Walk/Universal Studios is touristy but fun (there's another Gladstones there, along with a Jazz place, etc.) In the summer I used to like golf in the Desert (Palm Springs). You could buy passbooks that would get you on awesome courses fr cheap (hey, its a dry heat). It's a couple of hours west though. Marina Del Rey has a slew of restaurants and bars; can't speak to what you'll find there nowadays. Couple hours south is San Diego. Old Town and Seaport Village are nice for a stroll, but Gaslamp District rocks. Also great for golf. Up north is Santa Barbara. The drive along the coast is nice. Good beach right by town. Possibly quiet since USB is probably in summer semester. State Street is the happenin' street there, but its MUCH more laid back than Sunset for instance. For beaches, from north to south I liked: Paradise Cove (Malibu, prepare to pay to park if you don't eat at the restaurant there), Manhattan Beach (not far south of LAX; wealth and bods), Newport Beach (Orange County). Some Newport Beach restaurant/bars (near the Fun Zone, on the bay side) used to do Reggae on Sunday afternoons, if you happen to be in the area. There's not much in Hollywood to see, IMHO. Be careful if you venture there at night.
I was in LA visitng my brother in law in mid May. Hollywood isn't THAT bad at night. My bro in law lives in Hollywood. Just be careful at night like you would in Houston and you'll be fine. Don't miss the intersection of Hollywood and Highlands. It's awesome. You might want to check out a shopping and dining area called The Grove. It has dancing fountains and an old style trolley. Pretty cool for a few minutes if you are in the area. There is a really cool neighborhood bar called the Bigfoot Lodge. I don't know the address but it is where my brother in law hangs out and the waitresses are HOT. As for food...go to: 1) Pink's (legendary!!!) 2) Tommy's Burgers 3) Rick's (if you get out to Pasadena) 4) Astro Burger (Jack Black likes to go there) Also if you find yourself in Hollywood at 2am with the munchies, go to Fred's 62...really cool retro diner. You may want to consult sidewalk. com or something like it to get a flavor for what LA has. I LOVED LA and am very jealous of you right now.
In addition to the above, there are the more touristy type things, Disneyland, Magic Mountain, Knott's Berry Farm, La Brea tar pits, etc.
Go see the Getty Museum if you can. I worked for the Getty from 1994-1998 with the last year up on "Sugar Mountain". It's impressive, especially if you like art, and the views are spectacular on a clear day. Do some shopping on Melrose, especially on a Saturday afternoon, and enjoy the freak show. And definitely don't use y'all. It won't help you with the women. Only a big roll of greenbacks will help you there!
I also recommend the Getty Museum. I was there for a day last August, but I could have stayed a week.
Thanks for the suggestions. We will definitely check out the Getty Museum. I doubt if we will rent a car, so I don't see heading out to Palm Springs for some golf, although my dad and I would love it. I have never played a full round of golf outside of Texas... We will probably take the mandatory strolls down the LA streets. Well, better go load up the car, see you all(Right?) Tuesday. -I will try to avoid saying y'all, but what do I say when I have to? I have asked some of my cousins from the north, but never got a clear answer.
