Statement on last play of Giants-49ers game
    NFL.com wire reports

•Giants' holder could not have spiked ball

(Jan. 6, 2003) -- The New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers were informed that a defensive pass interference penalty should have been called on the final play of their NFC Wild Card Game.

A videotape review by NFL Director of Officiating Mike Pereira of the final play -- the Giants' 41-yard field goal attempt with six seconds remaining -- determined the following:

Tam Hopkins, No. 65, of the Giants lined up as the left guard and was illegally downfield on the pass attempt. The three flags thrown on this play were for this penalty.
Guard Rich Seubert, No. 69, was an eligible receiver on Giants field-goal attempts. This was reported to the officiating crew prior to the game as is routinely done before every game.
49ers defensive end Chike Okeafor interfered with Seubert downfield when he was attempting to catch Giants holder Matt Allen's pass. This defensive pass-interference penalty against the 49ers was not called.
If defensive pass interference had been called, there would have been offsetting penalties (ineligible receiver against the Giants and pass interference against the 49ers) with the down replayed at the original line of scrimmage, the San Francisco 23-yard line. Although time had expired, a game cannot end with offsetting penalties. Thus, the game would have been extended by one untimed down.

Too bad the Giants can't receive an extra attempt now. I'm not a Giants fan, but this is still ridiculous.

Yet another poor call by the officials.

Wow! So NY did get royally screwed. The pass interference call was basically a no-call. It appears the refs were all looking at the illegal man downfield.

So, now begs the question...why no replay of the final play in the booth. Can you challenge a no-call on a pass interference if it is as blatant as that was?

Bring em back...we are going to play one more down.

6 days into the new year, and already the refs are blowing calls left and right.

I don't think that replay can be used to challenge penalties or no-calls.

    Breaking News:

Karl Malone bearhugged Clyde Drexler on an illegal screen to free up John Stockton for a "3" to send the Jazz to the finals in 1996.

Think they'll let us bring Hornacek, Drexler, Dream, Barkley and Bullard back to replay it??

    Wow. That sucks. (subliminal Renfro)

At least know the rules. They could have taken 10 minutes to get this one right if they wanted. Keep the teams on the field and talk to the head ref for christs' sake. That's just embarassing for the NFL.

Unbelievable. I'm sure the Giants will feel better by that standard letter of apology sure to arrive in the mail soon.

Yea...bring back the Rockets to re-play that one play against the Jazzholes. I LIKE IT! I LIKE IT! I LIKE IT!

This just begs the question, "DO YOU FEEL LUCKY, PUNK? WELL...DO YOU?" .

The NY Giants must answer with a resounding "NO!" . But, they mostly blew the game so it's really their own faults for being in that situation. If you must count on the refs in critical situations, then you better pray to God you have Lady Luck on your side.

    NO SOUP FOR YOU!

You just have to live with it tho'. Try to think of Just the titans/oilers franchise alone in the playoffs. I can think of at least 4 plays that the refs were highly scrutinized for

-Renfro td catch versus Pittsburgh was inbounds
-I think it was Bee Bee who ran out of bounds and then back in to catch a td versus the oilers (mother of all comebacks)
    -The Adelphi miracle
-Refs blew the whistle negating a cleveland fumble recovery versus Oilers

i'm gonna say something i never thought i'd actually say out loud...he didn't have control of the ball when he was in bounds. i think the call could easily have gone either way...but seeing replays of it again today, i think the call would have stood had they gone to replay as we know it today. inconclusive. he was juggling it even as his first foot was stepping out.

but damn it, corey bradford scored a td this year against the bills that was overturned...ridiculous!!!!
