Fan charged in umpire attack says alcohol-fueled tackle 'was dumb' CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- A man who is charged with attacking an umpire on a baseball field says the stunt capped a daylong drinking binge and was designed to "get a rise out of the crowd." "I never intended for it to be like I was trying to inflict any danger on anybody," Eric Dybas, 24, told the Chicago Sun-Times in an interview from jail. Dybas said he'd had six beers (six beers? that's like $30 -rH) Tuesday while at Wrigley Field for a Chicago Cubs afternoon game and another six at U.S. Cellular Field during the White Sox night game against the Kansas City Royals. "I wanted to get a rise out of the crowd," Dybas said in the interview published Sunday. Dybas crashed into first-base umpire Laz Diaz, who was not hurt. Dybas was charged with felony aggravated battery and misdemeanor criminal trespass, and is being held on $250,000 bond. If convicted, he faces two to five years in prison, according to prosecutors. "I'm deeply sorry," Dybas said. "I regret doing everything that I did." ------------ Eric Dybas.... the judge should order him to change his name to Eric Dumbass.....
Dybas was charged with felony aggravated battery and misdemeanor criminal trespass, and is being held on $250,000 bond. If convicted, he faces two to five years in prison, according to prosecutors. I wonder if he would have been charged a lesser offense if he got caught driving home drunk. It looks like the DA could get flagged for piling on
I thought is was pretty funny that the Ump fought back (unlike the 1st base coach last year) and actually got some good licks in before the players piled on the jackass! The guy last year was out-numbered and totally surprised. The ump this year would have destroyed that a-hole if the players didn't rightfully jump in!
Some player was stomping on his leg well after the fight should have been over. I thought that was amusing.
