In places like Thailand, people flock to, and go mental for shows with guys dressed up as women and dancing. I don't see the appeal. Can anyone explain to me why anyone would find this so grandiose?
About as much potential as the Batman Jones=Awesome thread. I'd say this thread has stromile swift potential
Women weren't allowed on stage in the West until the late seventeenth century, I think. However, in privileged all-male societies/clubs that persist it's still not uncommon. (For example, up until last century, the stages of Ivy League schools.) Hasty Pudding. Rudy Giuliani. Kids in the Hall. It's a standard of male-dominant enclaves in even socially liberal societies. Also, Divine and RuPaul were pretty popular, as recently as ten-twenty years ago. (And John Travolta a few years back, reprising Divine's role.)
Interesting, but it doesnt help me understand the love for it. And if its a continuation or celebration of 'holding women down' then I am completely bemused....I don't want that crap supported.
More like byproduct, but yeah. I think it's usually a weird byproduct of not having women around / living in a society which demeans women. Or, in the case of sketch comedy troupes (Python, Kids, Whitest Kids, etc.), because they don't have enough trusted female members. (Heck, SNL regularly trots out its [usually black] male members in drag, for reliably cheap laughs.) Having never traveled to Thailand, maybe you just wandered into (from your perspective) the wrong kind of club? Or is it really a nation of RuPauls? Without having been there, I always associated Thailand with other kinds of perversion.
To be honest, I havent been to Thailand either - the thought of these drag queens running around all over the place turns me off the whole idea. Give me a nice quiet island anytime. I just saw something about it on TV which sparked my brain.
Why do people go to freak shows? Its out of curiousity and/or for the sake of experiencing something new. I've never been to Thailand, think that trannies are scary, everyone says that the ladyboys are more attractive that the real Thai women and I would only go to Thailand for the beaches and the food.
I've been to Thailand many times and the whole ladyboy thing is overplayed. Yes, there are plenty of them but unless you are very drunk in the wrong type of places, you don't need to worry about them. Its not like you see them everywhere. If you don't go to the crappy bars where all the prostitutes hang out, you may see one every other day and they are pretty obvious since most of them don't look too much like girls. In regards to the drag shows, my brother in law took me to one in Pattaya and it was very strange because the dudes/performers were very feminine. To the point that you thought they were females pretending to males, pretending to be females. They have the performers stand outside after the show to prove that they were indeed men since they were a little taller than a typical Thai girl and had deeper voices. I found this picture on google an this is what they look like.
