I received the following tv and bluray player for Father's day from my wife:

    http://www.vizio.com/products/detail.aspx?pid=43

    http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665088000

The setup that I have currently is as follows:

The blu-ray is connected to the TV with a HDMI connection and to a receiver with a standard audio (red/white) connection.

The tv is connected to the Dish DVR with a standard video/audio connection (red, white and yellow).

The Dish DVR is connected to the receiver with a digital optical audio.

We have watched a blu-ray movie as well as a standard DVD and have enjoyed surround sound. There are also no issues with surround sound related to the Dish DVR. However, there have been a couple of standard DVD that does not produce the surround sound and in fact you can only hear the background sound. What could be the issue? Is there something wrong with my setup or do I need some other connection?

you should also connect your bluray with an optical or digital coax to your receiver. if you do the standard red/white, you are just getting analog sound which is the lowest audio form.

your digital connection gets you all the good stuff like dts/dd etc.

You would help us help you determine the best connection if you post your model of receiver.

Go like this for HIGH to low quality audio connections:

HDMI (a trapezoidal connector) - sound and video into one
Optical (a laser through a fiber within a plastic cover) - sound up to 7.1 and DTS
Digital Coax (usually orange) - sound up to 5.1 Dolby© Surround in 1 cable
RCA (white for mono, red for stereo) - surround sound

If you can, make the best sound connection to your receiver or TV, and then from the TV out via optical or HDMI to your surround sound system.

    I have as follows:
Into TV - HDMI from u-Verse, HDMI from DVD/VCR recorder, optical digital from PS2
From TV to Receiver - optical digital (this way, I leave the receiver on ONE input all the time)

If I want to watch a different source, I just switch video on the TV and nothing on the receiver, although I could do that, but I use less cables and the highest quality connection. The LESS CABLES, the better when troubleshooting and for minimizing clutter.

Thanks for the help Tinman and Swoly. I will try this tongiht after work. As far as the receiver goes - I think this could be part of the problem as it is at least 5 years old.

It is just odd that sometimes the movies will work and other times not even though the setup is the same.

    I will post later tonight.

Agreed...Everything should run through your receiver, but it begs the question what kind of reciever do you have...

Great father's day gift...ok, obligatory, you should have gotten a PS3...;)

you should still have digital coax/optical inputs for that receiver.
on your bluray player make sure you configure the sound output correctly.

also on your receiver, check out the speaker test, you may have your surrounds too low.

Good stuff. Try a THX tester (I believe most Disney and Pixar movies have them) to determine if your output is correct on your speakers.

tinman, my receiver is from about 4 years ago... and it didn't have HDMI... just two optical inputs for the highest quality. It's the Yamaha HTR-5740.

Update...I am watching a standard dvd in surround sound. Thanks for all the help.

Swoly - I used your setup as a guideline so now all I do is change the source instead of touching the receiver.

Tinman - I could not connect the blu-ray to the receiver any other way except the red/white connection. Like I said I have an old receiver...here is the model http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-home.pl?mdl=STRK750P&LOC=3&session_id=dc7552f22efd0276bc79eecfa68853fd. Looks like I need an upgrade :)

rrj - the wife said that if I want to exchange it for a PS3 then no problem. However I think I will just keep the player and get a Wii for the family later.

The next thing for me is to get HD programming so I can enjoy the tv.

    yes you can dude.
you have one opitcal and one digital coax. go buy a digital coax cable and connect the bluray player to it.

i use the digital coax, it works fine.

Nope, you don't need an upgrade like tinman said. :p

Let me guess this right... for the best possible connections... Cables Needed - 2 (one optical, one HDMI):
You are doing HDMI from the Blu-Ray to the TV for the best video and audio signal. [page 15 of your Blu-Ray player manual http://www.sonystyle.com/wcsstore/SonyStyleStorefrontAssetStore/pdf/BDPS300.pdf, pretend "av amplifier" is your tv; page page 13 of your VIZIO manual: http://www.vizio.com/media/products/pdfs/VW46L+FHDTV10A+User's+Manual.pdf ]
You can send only RCA or Optical OUT from the TV to your receiver, so you choose Optical. [page 23 of your VIZIO TV, page 10 of your receiver http://129.33.22.12/release/HTDDW750.pdf ]

    Is all that right?
