I havent hooked up anything yet through hdmi but i had a quick question to those who have. If i connect my hd receiver and my dvd player to my hdmi inputs on my tv, can i use the optical out connection on my tv to my receiver to be able to decode dd 5.1, dts etc? or will i have to connect the receiver and dvd player individually to the receiver? hdmi is supposed to be able handle digital audio as well. is it better for me to hook the audio and video separately? figure it would be nice to not have to change inputs on the receiver when going from tv to dvd.

    thanks in advance (and tinman)

I think you can do it either way, I have HDMI dvd player hoooked up to my TV, but an optical output going from the player to the receiver which does dts, etc.

Not sure if that's the best way though, I just like to eliminate the TV as a "middleman"

Yeah those things are nice...what sucked was the one day i had off at circuit city last year when i worked there was the day when the logitech guy came in and gave those away for free to salespeople there. I was soo pissed because I was the resident computer expert and sold more logitech crap by myself than the rest of the store combined and I didnt get one. The people who just ring up cds and dvds got one and they were like "I will sell you mine for 100 bucks" I told them to F-Off.

I dont like having a bunch of remotes, but its something I can deal with for now, an expensive remote is a def huge luxury i dont really want to spend for right now.

tinman... you're funny, dude... he asked for AUDIO stuff, and you're giving him a remote control link... :D ok, ok... you have luxuries some of us can't afford man... I would like to buy me one of those soon... they look sweet.

    The_Yoyo, what's your receiver's model?

I have AUDIO/VIDEO input to my receiver, but no HDMI input. I do, however, have some Optical audio inputs, but my DVD player doesn't have it.

I connect my HD receiver with the Optical Cable to the Receiver, component video to the receiver.
I connect my PS2 with the Optical Cable to the Receiver, component video to the receiver.
When I switch my receiver's input, the AUDIO and the VIDEO switch on my TV and I can watch either one on my TV's DTV input. Is this what you meant about the Optical? I don't have HDMI on any component or AV receiver.

tinman, does HDMI do sound as well?

Yes it does, I think HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface, so it transmits video and audio in hd.

i dont have an audio/video receiver just an audio receiver.

so my setup would be: hd receiver---hdmi to tv, optical to receiver
dvd player --hdmi to tv, coax to receiver
xbox---component to tv, optical to receiver

my tv has an optical out on it so i guess i can test it out but can the hdmi send the audio to the tv and then the tv relay it to the audio receiver in DD,DTS etc? that way i only need to change a video input on the tv from sat to dvd and nothing on the audio receiver. I would only have to change the audio receiver when playing my xbox

I've never tried it (perhaps I should) but in theory it should work, yeah.

so i tried it out and it turns out HDMI will only transfer out two channels of audio, the L and R stereo channels so I had to hook up the dvd player to my receiver too.

oh yeah the tv is BEAUTIFUL. right now I am using an antenna so there is some pixelation issues (dish network being installed monday :) ) but my roomate "oh man jeopardy has never looked so good"

also the hd upconversion looks awesome for being standard dvds I was amazing at what a difference it can actually make
